I just read the biography of John Gokongwei, The Path of Entrepreneurship.

It’s an incredible story.

Did you know that on his 80^th birthday, he gave away half of his billions to charity? I want to do exactly the same thing when I reach 80. (I’ve got a few more years to earn my billions.)

A few weeks ago, I visited San Carlos University in Cebu.

Actually, John Gokongwei was born to a rich family. His father owned a chain of movie houses. A chauffeur drove him to school. And in school, he had lots of friends because he would invite them to watch movies for free.

But when he was 13, his father suddenly died of typhoid. Because his father’s empire was built on credit, they lost everything—the businesses, the house, the cars…

“When the free movies disappeared, I lost half of my friends,” he said.

When John had to walk 2 miles to school for the first time, he cried to his mother. But she said, “You should feel lucky. Some people have no shoes to walk to school.”

The 13-year-old John was forced to work.

He woke up at 5am to bike to the market with his basket of goods. There he set up a tiny table to sell soap, candles, and thread.

In 1943, he expanded his business. From Cebu, he would transport tires on a small boat called a batel to Manila. That was a five-day journey! And in Manila, he would buy goods he could bring back and sell in Cebu.

Fast forward today and John Gokongwei leads a multi-billion empire consisting of Cebu Pacific, Sun Cellular, Universal Robina, Robinsons malls, and a host of other companies. (I like Jack n Jill snacks, so I’m a fan.)

How did that happen? How could Cebu Pacific (the airline that made flights so affordable) start from selling peanuts? How could Robinsons malls start from a tiny table in a palengke?

Simple: John Gokongwei started small but dreamt big. His dream was so powerful, it fueled his daily life. He worked hard to make his dreams come true.

And that’s a universal principle you can bring to the bank.

1) Start Small

I know one very impatient person who did the very opposite: He liked to start big. I saw this man everyday. When? When I see the mirror!

Yes, this is my weakness, and I’ve paid dearly for it. But I’m learning. Here’s the reason why we need to start small: Because at the start of our learning curve, we will fail. You can bet your life on that. Beginners will fail, period. But if we start small, our failures won’t crush us. But if we start big right away, our failures will be big too, and we may give up. 2) Dream Big

I know some people who dream small dreams.

And these small dreams don’t happen. Because from the very start, they’re not exciting enough. So they don’t even take off.

When You Give To God, He Blesses You

It all started with P20.

In 1979, Rey Ortega was having breakfast with 4 friends.

While reading the newspaper, his eye caught an article about 200,000 out-of-school streetkids in Metro Manila.

The figure blew his mind. He couldn’t believe it. 200,000 kids on the streets?

The Principal said yes. “Her name is Rodora Lopez.”

So Rey sent Rodora to school.

The following year, he sent another one.

The year after that, he sent another.

And he has not stopped ever since.

Today, Rey has produced 54 college graduates. They are CPA’s, cum laude’s from UP, and top 10 board placers.

He has sent 5 poor kids to school from families devastated by Mt. Pinatubo.

And 8 poor kids from families crushed by flash floods in Infanta.

And 7 kids from blind families in Antipolo.

And 5 poor young seminarians want to be priests.

As if this wasn’t enough, Rey began an orphanage last year.

He didn’t want these kids roaming in the streets. He wanted to give them a home. So he and his wife opened their own home to 10 orphans!

Thankfully, they now have a separate house for the orphanage. They now care for 19 orphans.

It hasn’t been an easy path.

In its previous location, his orphanage was in a subdivision. But 88 Homeowners in that subdivision signed a 3-page “rejection” letter, refusing to have an orphanage in their village. The news crushed him.

But Rey prayed for another place that would welcome God’s little children. Recently, he found another place—very near our FEAST in Pasig. Very soon, the kids can walk to the FEAST every Sunday for our children’s ministry. It was a great blessing in disguise.

For a long time, Rey was running a one-man show. Being a businessman, he had the money to fund his work for God. Just last year, from his own pocket alone, he spent more than a half a million pesos for his orphanage and his scholars.

So you can imagine, from his first P20 in 1979, he has now given millions away. (Not to mention his sweat, blood, and tears.) But that’s how God has prospered Rey’s own business since 1979.

Yes, God provides for his work.

I believe that this is the purpose of wealth.

God will enrich us so that we can give more.

When you give, He will prosper the work of your hands.

Rey’s friends have not stopped helping him either. With much patience, he knocked on doors, called up friends, and wrote many letters. Last year, they were able to raise P830,000 for his scholars.

Andrea Helene Gogna shows us that nothing is impossible with God

It’s true.

Laughter can wipe a million tears away.

Let me introduce you to baby Andrea Helene Gogna. She is the gorgeous angel of Arun and Lalaine Gogna. Arun Gogna is one of your terrific Kerygma Preachers and Lalaine is one of my wife’s best friends.

Haven’t you noticed?

These days, babies come with two names. I have yet to meet a baby with only one. But after 9 long years of waiting, Arun and Lalaine could have given their little one 9 names and no one would have complained.

Yes, for 9 years, they prayed for a baby.

For 9 years, they longed to fill an empty womb.

For 9 years, they visited many doctors, took many injections, went through medical procedures that cost them the moon and the stars.

And not a single one of them worked. Not one!

I remember those painful times when my wife had to call Lalaine to comfort her. What would she say? What words can reach a grief so deep? So together, both women would cry on the phone as one more medical procedure would fail.

It was actually when they gave up and were not into any medical procedure—when Andrea Helene came exploding through their world.

It was six in the morning when Lalaine shook Arun awake. She held the tiny white pregnancy strip in front of his face. With streaming tears and a trembling voice, she said, “Love, there are two blue lines… That means you’re a father…”

They’ve never seen two lines before.

Always being the hilarious one, Arun asked his wife, “Are you sure you didn’t draw that second line in?”

For all those 9 years of waiting, they wept a million tears.

But on that lovely day, their laughter wiped all those tears away.

Last week, I attended Helene’s happy baptism.

But it wasn’t just a baptism.

It was a celebration of faith.

That miracles still do happen.

As I write this story, I know that there are many parents reading this who are praying for a baby. Perhaps longer than 9 years.

I have three things to say to you.

First, do not lose hope.

There is absolutely nothing impossible with God.

Second, do what you can.

To be physically rested, Prof. Arun gave up his teaching job in La Salle and Dra. Lalaine decreased her dental clinic hours. She also went through surgery to remove myomas in her uterus.

But ultimately, they surrendered to God.

Third, let God surprise you.

I have other friends who for years prayed for their own child.

To some of them, God gave them the surprising miracle of adoption.

Friends, adoption is one of the greatest expressions of love in this entire universe. I’m not kidding. How can you welcome a total stranger in your home and make her your flesh and blood? It is an absurd act that only the Almighty can invent.

But that’s why adoption has God’s fingerprints all over it.

Friend, you may not be praying for a baby.

Maybe you’re praying for healing.

Maybe you’re asking for a new job.

Maybe you want to migrate to another country.

Maybe you want to get married.

Chiqui Lara attracts blessings—and you can too!

 

I didn’t know what to expect.

I read the message in my cellphone.

“Ms. Chiqui Lara, 7:30am, Hotel Intercon.”

I was about to have breakfast with the President and CEO of a company, part of a multinational based in

London.

My imagination was playing on me.

I pictured this lady President to be a tall, imposing, sophisticated woman in a dark suit, high heels, and leather briefcase.

I was surprised when in walked a woman who was probably not more than 5’2 (I think), wearing a simple white blouse, black pants, and a gentle smile. No make-up. No jewelry. No briefcase.

She came up to me and extended her hand. (No nail polish either.)

Immediately, I sensed something special about this woman.

Was it inner peace?

I later learned why.

Two years ago, Chiqui was diagnosed to have cancer.

“Double primary cancer to be exact,” she said. That meant two cancerous tumors were growing on her ovaries and her uterus at the same time.

Everyone expected to see a devastated woman.

Instead, it was during those trying times that people saw how incredibly positive Chiqui was.

I had tears in my eyes (which I wiped whenever she wasn’t looking) listening to her recount how her family and friends loved her at her hour of need. “Bo, I was surrounded with so much love!”

Today, the cancer is gone.

I asked her, “Chiqui, what made you such a positive person?”

“My family,” she smiled. “I received so much love from them.”

She gave a powerful example of that love.

“Many Christmases ago, an orphanage had a program called Share-A-Home. Just for the Christmas holidays, my parents agreed to have two orphans, twin boys, ages one and a half. But after the week was over, my mother didn’t return them to the orphanage. The twins were supposed to stay with us for a week. They have stayed with us for the past 25 years.”

She also told me of another moving story.

“My father passed away at the age of 72. At the last day of the funeral, his other family appeared. A woman and three kids…”

“Oh no…” I said.

“Yes. We were so shocked.”

“No one knew at all?” I asked.

“No one knew. My father always went home everyday. So when his other family appeared, I remember talking to my mother and asking her, ‘What are we going to do?’ My mother simply said, ‘I’ve forgiven him already.’”

My jaw dropped.

“Yes,” Chiqui said, “That’s the kind of mother I had. She had so much love to give. Now you know why I am who I am.”

“Amen.”

“I’m very blessed, Bo. I really am.”

At the age of 32, she was already made a President of a huge advertising company, and later, as Vice Chairman.

Today, she is the President and CEO of a fantastic company, Y&R Philippines, part of a humongous multinational company that’s 60 years old.

In my terminology, Chiqui is a “Blessing Magnet”.

Why? Because she attracts blessings by the way she thinks, feels, believes, and acts.

Here are 6 strategies on how you can be a blessing-magnet, and be positive in a negative world:

1. Feel the love. Receive the love from the people around you, no matter how small or imperfect. Celebrate every little gesture of love you receive. Make it a big thing! And you’ll discover that you’ll receive more and more love.

2. Be grateful. Give thanks for every small blessing you receive. Before going to sleep, count at least 5 blessings you received on that day. Be grateful even for the bad things, knowing there’s a blessing inside. Gratitude attracts more blessings to come your way. 4. Have a vision. When you have a detailed, graphic, exciting vision burning in your heart, you can’t help but be positive. And here’s my true-to-life experience: That powerful vision in your imagination will attract all the blessings you need to fulfill that vision. You’ll be surprised. The blessings will just come, rolling down at your feet, begging that you receive them.

5. Love yourself. Be deliberate in loving yourself. Respect yourself. Don’t belittle yourself, don’t limit yourself, and don’t call yourself derogatory names. Meet your needs. Aggressively care for yourself. When you do, others will respect you, love you, and meet your needs as well.
