Why I Look Like Tom Cruise

I get interviewed a lot.

Perhaps once a week, I get interviewed (No joke).

My problem is that I get asked the same questions over and over again.

So just to break the monotony, I give them the silliest answers.

Let me share with you one interview today.

Despite the jokes, I’m sure you’ll pick up something for your own personal growth. Here it is…

Q: Brother Bo, we’re going to ask you some very basic questions.

Bo: No problem. You wouldn’t know if my answers would be correct anyway, right?

Q: (Laughs) When and where were you born?

Bo: July 11, 1966 in Caloocan City. Or was that 1976? Let me show you my baby photo. (See below.) At least, that’s what my mother said when she gave me this photo. But because the creature in the photo looks like a miniaturized sumo wrestler, I’m wondering if it was really me. What do you think?

Do you see a neck? Nada. Zero. Zilch.

Q: Who are your parents?

Bo: Eugenio and Pilar Sanchez. The most fantastic human beings on the planet.

Q: We read somewhere that they have a great love story. How did they meet?

Bo: Mom was a pretty 19 year old girl when she met Dad. She was applying for work in his office. Dad, 6 years older than her, liked what he saw and, take note, secretly gave her the answers to the entrance exam—just so that she would pass! He then hired her on the spot and asked for his first date. This may scandalize you, but three months later, Mom and Dad got married. Obviously, they never told me this shocking piece of information until I was 31 years old—when I was far and safe from the impulsiveness of teenage romance.

Q: What was their religious background?

Bo: Catholic. Do you know what was their first date?

Q: What?

Bo: Morning Mass. And from that day on, they never stopped going to daily Mass for the rest of their lives. Before Dad died last year, they celebrated 63 years of wedded bliss.

Q: Where did you go to School?

Bo: I switched schools like I switched shirts. I started in Stella Maris, jumped to San Carlos Boys, hopped to St. Josephs, switched to Claret High School, and finally landed in the Ateneo. Yes, I never got a Loyalty Award.

Q: What was your course in college?

Bo: AB Philosophy.

Q: Did you take up Masters?

Bo: I took up my Masters in Theology but never did my thesis. I was just too busy with my ministry. My purpose wasn’t to get a degree. I just wanted to learn more.

Q: Where did you work?

Bo: In a normal job and normal company? Never. I’m now 41 and I’ve never had a Boss in my entire life. Ever since high school, I was already serving in ministry. And when I was in college, I was already working “full-time” in the ministry of the Lord. I founded 4 non-profit organizations and I’ve always been the leader. I guess I’m just lazy and I don’t want to work for anyone.

Q. Why did you become a preacher?

Bo: I had a spiritual conversion at age 12. I experienced God’s love in such a real and intimate way. And I wanted to do two things. First, the force of that love overwhelmed me and I wanted to love Him back. Second, I wanted to live a life of significance. I wanted my life to have eternal meaning. And so I had this desire to serve God by preaching. Would you believe, as a 13-year-old kid, I would imagine myself standing before 30,000 people in Araneta Coliseum, holding a bible and a microphone, preaching God’s Word.

Q. Did that happen?

Bo: I gave my first talk in the Araneta Coliseum at age 16. That was a miracle. Let me prove it to you: Here’s my passport photo when I was 16. Would you have listened to that… uh, alien?

The Creature.

Q. Was there a particular event in your life that caused you to become a preacher?

Bo: At age 13, Aida, our prayer group leader prophesied that I would receive the gift of wisdom and that I would preach. So she asked me to give a talk that following Friday prayer meeting. So at age 13, I preached my first talk and never stopped ever since. I owe my ministry to that woman, Aida. She believed in me. She saw something in me that others—even I—didn’t see in me. And all through the years, I’ve been trying to be an Aida in other people’s lives. I raise people up and release them to the world. It’s been fun.

Q. We have noticed that you talk about a broad range of topics. Do you have favorite topics now?

Bo: After almost 30 years of preaching, my favorite topics now are about building people’s self-esteem, teaching people to see themselves the way God sees them, and helping them to dream again. For me to do that, I have to change their distorted images of God and of themselves. Another favorite topic right now is helping people raise their financial literacy and teaching them the right theology and psychology towards money. Can I plug?

Q. Yes, please!

Q. Why do you use various media? You seem to use everything. You use television and radio and books and magazines and the internet…

Q. You’re both a Preacher of God and also a Motivational or Inspirational Speaker. Is there a conflict?

Bo: Truth is universal. So I give one message. But yes, I’m a preacher in our prayer meetings because I can more openly talk about my sources—the Bible and our faith tradition. And I’m an inspirational speaker in my corporate seminars where I source my message from history, secular authors, social sciences, etc. But the message remains the same because the simplest truth that changes lives is universal.

Q. Why do you think thousands of people admire you?

Bo: Because I look like Tom Cruise. You don’t believe me? Our intestines, kidneys, and spleen really look alike. Okay seriously now. Gee, I’ll be guessing here. Three things. First, perhaps because I try to be honest with my failures and weaknesses. I don’t hide them. People know my sins. So perhaps they see themselves in me. Second, perhaps because I try to speak their language. I speak simply. I don’t try to impress people with my knowledge. Finally, perhaps because I speak what matters to them, their most pressing needs. Because I want to help them where they hurt the most. Aside from those three things, I really think it’s the Tom Cruise thing.

Q. How do you attain your own goals?

Bo: I start small. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Second, I bring together a dream team around me. I don’t go into a project without a fantastic group of people who will assist me in that project. Third, I keep at it. I keep positive. I keep faith. I keep focused. I believe that when a man is focused on his dreams with passion, he becomes a blessing-magnet. He doesn’t even have to look for them. Every blessing that he needs to fulfill his dreams will come to him. He will find blessings rolling down at his feet, begging that he receives them.

Q. We heard that you don’t send your kids to school. Instead, you homeschool them. Why such a radical decision?

Bo: It was a difficult decision. But after 4 years of homeschooling our kids, we see the fruits. We’ve been able to form the values in our kids. We enjoy a very strong relationship with them. Q. How is your relationship with God?

Bo: Alive. Intimate. Happy. Fun. Real. Honest. Worldly. I experience Him in the most secular moments of my life.

Q. You seem to be a very different kind of Preacher. You don’t only preach. You want to help the poor. You want to change the world. Why?

Bo: I began to understand that essence of Christianity. It is love. I’ll say something that will shock the daylights out of you. I believe that Salvation isn’t about going to Heaven. I believe Salvation is about bringing Heaven down on earth, especially to those who are suffering the most—the poor, the sick, the abandoned, and the spiritually lost. My faith is meaningless—my prayer meetings, my liturgical rituals, my bible reading, my religious beliefs—if I do not love my neighbor.

Q. What are you plans for the future?

Bo: I’ll continue to preach about God’s love. I’ll continue to teach people to believe in the God that believes in them. I’ll continue to share very practical ways of living the Christian life—in their families, in their jobs… I’ll use media more extensively to share this message. As a community, we will give half of our funds for evangelism and the other half for our work for the poor. Specifically, we will do developmental work for the poorest of the poor, establishing micro-credit and livelihood facilities. We will work with other groups to eradicate world poverty.

The Princess Rides the MRT

 

I shook my head, “A Diplomat traveling by MRT?”

Honestly, I thought Grace had just stepped out of her black limousine.

She laughed. “Bo, I do take the MRT. Especially now that my car has been breaking down. And I didn’t want to miss our meeting, so I took the fastest route coming here, and that was through the train.”

This was my first exposure of how simple Grace was.

The food we ordered hadn’t arrived, so I asked my first question.

“Grace, what is your most memorable experience in your work as a Diplomat?”

“War,” she answered.

“I was Consul General in Iraq right before the war in 2003 and I took charge of evacuating all the Filipinos out of that country. Those were terrifying days,” she said.

“Watching it on CNN was terrifying already,” I said.

“We were in the middle of it. You could feel the tension in the air. And we were all afraid for lives. Because of my diplomatic status, my house became a refuge for the international staff of CNN, BBC, and UN. But I made it into a house of prayer. Though we came from various faiths and nations, we prayed together as one…”

“That’s beautiful.”

“And because I didn’t want to be a dead Diplomat, I finally flew out of Iraq on March 17. Three days later, March 20, the invasion and bombing took place.”

“Wow.”

“But Brother Bo, do you know how I was rewarded?”

“How?”

“After all my hard work, sacrifice, even risking my life, I came home only to be accused of corruption.”

“Oh no,” I said.

“Some people who didn’t like me spread rumors that I was given 2 million barrels of oil from Saddam Hussein.”

“My gosh. If you did, I don’t think you would have come by MRT today.”

“Some people simply wanted to destroy my reputation.”

I nodded, “I guess this is the story of every hero on the planet. After you give your life, blood, sweat, and tears for others, you’ll be attacked by envious people.”

“It was painful, but God sustained me. The rumors were all proven baseless.”

“God always vindicates us in the end,” I said, “Tell me. I love your name. Who is Grace Princesa?”

Your Greatest Curse Can Turn To Be

Your Greatest Blessing

Michelangelo had a persecutor who was very jealous of him.

(I don’t mean the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, but the real Michelangelo.)

The persecutor’s name was Bramante, a famous architect during that time.

By the way, do you know Bramante? I’m positive 99% of you never heard of him. Do you notice how persecutors fade away in the dust, but the one they persecute become legends? An important lesson to remember!

When Pope Julius thought of making a tomb, he asked Michelangelo to do it.

But when Bramante heard of it—and thought of the acclaim that Michelangelo would receive from it—he discouraged the Pope from continuing with the project. True enough, after Michelangelo searched far and wide for the perfect marble for the project—which took 8 long months—he learned that the Pope had abandoned the project. Michelangelo was very disappointed.

One day, the Pope thought of another project.

Upon hearing about it, Bramante concluded that it would be a time-consuming project and would receive very little public acclaim. So he told the Pope to give it to Michelangelo. In his mind, it would keep the artist busy for years—and accomplish nothing of great value.

Besides, it was also a painting job, and Bramante knew that Michelangelo was not even a painter, but a sculptor.

Michelangelo saw the trap. He knew it was a ploy by his enemy to destroy him. At first, he declined. But the Pope insisted, and not wanting to deny his Holiness, he agreed.

The project was indeed time-consuming. It took Michelangelo 4 years to finish, and he almost lost his eyesight because of it…

I’m sure you know the project by now: The Sistine Chapel. The grandest masterpiece of Michelangelo. More than anything, it made him one of the greatest painters of all time.

What was meant to curse him turned out to be his greatest blessing.

Good Friday was supposed to be the greatest curse.

Yet it also turned out to be the greatest blessing.

No Matter What Trials Come,

Keep Doing The Good You’re Supposed To Do

I reflect on this story and look at my own life.

I’ve been serving God for that past 27 years, and I do get my share of little “Bramante’s” scattered here and there.

But without them, I would have missed my greatest blessings: spiritual growth, opportunities to serve, and the impact I have on people’s lives.

My biggest Bramante’s were the two men who molested me as a child.

Because of these indescribable painful experiences, I’ve been able to heal so many people who have the same inner wounds. (You can read more about this in two of my books, Your Past Does Not Define Your Future, and 7 Secrets To Real Freedom.)

I could also think of my other trials in life…

Oh, why do bad things happen to good people?

Here’s my great theological answer: I don’t know.

But this I know. No matter what trials come, I’ll do the good that I’m supposed to do.

And at the end of the day, I will win.

Friend, remain faithful to God in good times and in bad times.

And you’ll see how all things work for good to those who love Him.

And you’ll see how your Good Friday will turn to Easter Sunday.

4 Big Things I Will Do Before I Hit 50

Some Things Just Can’t Be Postponed!

Sometimes, I can’t believe I’m 41.

Jeepers, I’ll be 42 this July.

Not too long ago, I was a 13 year-old skinny kid preaching to a roomful of ancient adults. For years, I was always the youngest in the room.

Wherever I went, they called me, “Bo Sanchez, a young Preacher…” Recently, I’m quickly losing that title. People just call me, “Bo Sanchez, a Preacher…”

Ouch. Quietly, the word “Young” has been dropped.

Oh, once in awhile, it still happens. Like when I was introduced by a guy who was 86. I think he called everyone young.

But that’s not too bad.

Would you believe I now have meetings where I’m the oldest in the room? I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.

And this is what scared me: One of these days, I’ll be announcing in this newsletter that I’ll be 50.

My gosh, that’s just 8 years from now!

Do you know that 8 years is nothing?

In a wink, 8 years will pass, and kaboom—I’ll be half-a-century old.

Hey, don’t get me wrong.

I believe 50 is young today. (Ask Edu Manzano.)

There was a time when 50 was ancient.

Not anymore.

My father died at 88.

So if I hit 50, that still gives me 38 fantastic years!

That’s a lot.

I can still write a lot more books (2 to 3 a year) and preach a lot more talks (300+ a year). I can still have a lot more dates with my lovely wife (52 a year—and that’s the minimum!).

But I realize now that I have 4 big goals before I hit 50—because I may not be able to do these things after I hit 50. All these 4 biggies are time sensitive and have tight deadlines.

Here are my 4 golden goals before I reach 50:

1) I’ll play with my kids more

2) I’ll date my mother more

3) I’ll build my investments more

4) I’ll build my health more

First Goal: I’ll Play with My Kids More

 

My supercharged, nuclear-powered boys are 8 and 3 today.

So everyday, they ask me, “Daddy, can you play with me?”

But when I hit 50, they’ll be 16 and 11.

Yikes. There’ll be teenagers in my house!

By that time, I don’t think they’ll be asking me to play with them that often (Unless it’s tennis or badminton or something like that).

Honestly, now that their 8 and 3, I don’t welcome their question every single time they ask me to play with them. Because often, I’m buried in my work.

I work from home.

And we don’t send our kids to school but homeschool them ourselves. (Crazy, huh. We’ve been doing it for four years now and have seen the great fruit of homeschooling. So unless I have meetings or talks, I’m at home with my kids.

And whenever I’m home, my boys would come up to me often and ask, “Daddy, can you play with me?”

Sometimes, it’s pokemon cards.

Sometimes, it’s cars and rocket ships.

Sometimes, it’s a computer game.

Sometimes, it’s a wrestling match on the floor.

I decided long ago that should they ask me that question, my answer should always be Yes. Not later. Not tomorrow. Not next week.

Just a simple, happy, beautiful Yes.

Even if every part of me wants to say, “No! Can’t you see I’m busy? Can’t you see I’m saving the world? Can’t you see I’m writing a book that will be read by a million people? Can’t you see that I’m helping the Pope run the Catholic Church? Can’t you see I’m building the Kingdom of God and without me, this universe will fall into the abyss of eternal Hell?”

I don’t say any of that silliness.

All I do is beam a smile at them and say, “Sure, son! What do you want to play?”

My plan is to keep saying Yes to that request while its there.

Because a day will come when they will no longer ask me that question.

Second Goal: I’ll Date My Mother More Often

 

Let me explain.

I’m the youngest of 6 kids, so Mom is 82.

She’s still as strong and bright as ever.

But that also means when I hit 50, she’ll be 90. (Hey, she could live until 110—which is great. But I’m hedging my bets.)

So this too is a time-sensitive goal.

Dad passed away last year, so Mom is mostly by herself.

Her friends are all dying out on her too.

Each morning, as morbid as this may sound (and believe me, we’ll all reach this stage), she checks the obituaries in the newspaper if another friend has died again. Sheesh.

So now, she has very few people to call up on the phone.

Except for her 6 children.

Who are caught up in their busy lives.

Especially her youngest boy who has become an International Preacher, Bestselling Author, and all-around Handsome Hunk whom girls can’t resist. (The last description is a result of my fasting too much this Lent.)

She sometimes calls me and I can’t be reached because I’m gallivanting somewhere in the world reaching to the lost.

But I’ve decided that this will be my second golden goal before I hit 50.

While Mom is still strong, I’ll call her up regularly, bring her out on dates, and take her along in some of my trips.

Like last year, I brought Mom with me in my US preaching trip. (Thank God for frequent flier miles!) She had a wonderful time meeting the few friends who were still alive and who can still carry an intelligent conversation. When they do talk, their topics revolve around their aches and pains, what medicines they take, their most interesting “senior citizen discount” stories, and the awards of their many grandchildren.

Mom loves to talk.

And I love to listen.

It’s a great combination.

Third Goal: I’ll Build My Investments More

 

They tell me that only 2% of people above the age of 65 are financially independent. That means 98% of elderly people have to depend on their relatives to survive, or live in charitable institutions (like our Anawim), or keep on working until their 80’s…

That’s tragic.

When I’m 70, I don’t want to be calling up my son, saying, “Uh son, can you give me and your mother… uh, some money to… uh, buy groceries? We’re down to our last can of sardines. If you won’t give us money today,we’ll be eating the expired noodles that were handed out last Christmas in Church…”

No way.

I don’t want to grow old.

I want to grow old and rich.

Correction.

I want to grow old and rich and generous!

Because I still believe that the purpose of wealth is to help others.

Look, it doesn’t take much to make millions if time is on your side.

Or billions, if you prefer. (I’m not kidding.)

Do you know that if you invest P1,000 a month at an equity fund or stock that grows at 12% per year, you’ll be a billionaire in 80 years?

I’m not kidding. Do the math.

I’m already 41, so If I invest P1,000 a month, I’ll be a billionaire when I reach 121 years old. Ha, I wonder how I’ll look like by that time.

But I don’t have to wait for that long.

Because I can invest more than a thousand bucks a month.

Much, much more.

So I won’t complain if by 80, I’ll have half-a-billion pesos.

I can live with that shortfall. Can you?

Fourth Goal: I’ll Build My Health More

Here’s my goal: I want to be strong until I’m 99 years old.

By that age, I’ll still be walking around with a sharp mind and a contagious laugh. I also want to die in my sleep and wake up in Heaven.

So I want to listen to my body more.

It’s just like my investments. What I do for my 40-year old body will show up magnified in my 80-year old body.

Little things count.

· I’ll do more breathing exercises

· I’ll drink more fresh water

· I’ll take more veggie juices

· I’ll eat more veggies and fruits

· I’ll exercise more

· I’ll rest, sleep, and take vacations more

· I’ll get rid of emotional garbage and think positively more

Speaking of health, I met a wonderful and wise 63-year old Wellness Teacher by the name of Amado Samia. I was very impressed as he shared with me the power of touch therapy and other ancient health techniques that are drawn from both science and faith. Yes, Amado is a committed Christian and marries what he teaches with Biblical truth.

Oh, by the way, when I reach 99—you can start calling me old.

The Incredible Power Of Your Imagination

I just came from Dubai.

And I still can’t get over it.

This is my second time to visit that fascinating city, but the effect on me is still the same. Like a man walking out of a spellbinding magic show, I’m still in a daze. Primarily, I’m overwhelmed by its guts. Its boldness. Its audacity.

Ed also took me to a desert safari. He drove me in his Land Cruiser in the outskirts of Dubai—which was what many parts of that city looked like just a few years ago…

But when the Ruler of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum (fondly called “Sheik Mo”) looked at this dusty, rocky, barren dessert, he saw something no one else saw. In his imagination, he saw dazzling skyscrapers reaching for the stars. Among them, he saw the tallest building in the world. He also saw a 7-Star Hotel. He also saw entire islands rising from the sea.

Today, all that has become a reality.

Dubai is now the showcase of the entire Arab world.

I passed one tiny section of this spectacular city. I saw 60 new skyscrapers rising from the dust. It was mind-blowing.

The biggest manmade islands are now found there.

I visited their 7-Star hotel, and I thought I was in a Star Trek spaceship.

The tallest building in the world is now found in Dubai—the Burj Dubai.

Why am I talking about Dubai?
