Hi, Preachers. And Would-Be Preachers.
I’m also a Preacher. Been one for 25 years now.
But many times, I’m also your audience.
Many times, I'm also the ordinary Mr. Guy-At-The-Pew because I too listen to Lay Preachers and Priests give their talks. So I see you, the Preacher, the way 90% of the world sees you: A figure in front some seventy feet away, three-fourths of your body covered by an old pulpit.
Competing against your talk is the humidity of the Philippines, the noisy kids around me, plus the lovely girl in front of me wearing a spaghetti strap blouse that exposes her exquisite neck and flawless shoulders.
And as if all these aren’t enough, I’m very distracted by my problems at my job and my family that keep replaying in my mind like the refrain of a hit song on radio. I’m thinking of my big and small concerns. The debt that needs to be paid on Tuesday. The electric fan that my wife asked me to fix 6 weeks ago. The DVD that my son wants me to rent after Mass…
How can you compete?
I have 8 suggestions.
I gave this talk to a group of 90 priests—and they were immensely grateful.
Here they are…
For starters, I want to see you.
Move out of the pulpit. Don’t hide.
If you have something to say, show yourself.
Remember, you’re speaking to a generation raised by television, spending 5 hours a day with it since birth. So we’re visually-wired. We need to see something moving in front of us if you want to speak to us.
Second, connect with me.
My friend complained, “When my parish priest gives his talk, I sometimes feel he’s autistic. He just babbles his words to the wind. It’s as though we’re not even there in front of him. I have this great desire to shout and wave my hand, ‘Yoohoo, Father, I’m here! Hello!’”
Yes, Preachers.
Speak to me. Look at me. Talk to me. Converse with me.
Connect.
Third, use small words.
For example, I noticed that priests love this word: Dichotomy.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard it from the pulpit.
Father, you’re no longer a seminarian taking a compre, impressing your theo prof.
Do people go to the market and say, “Isang kilo lang ang bibilhin ko sa malaking isda na yan. Paki-dichotomize mo nga…” I don’t think so.
If you know that 90% of your listeners don’t use the word dichotomy, and your goal is to communicate, then don’t you use it.
You might as well speak German if you do.
Fourth, tell stories.
Here’s what I’ve learned from sales people: Facts tell but stories sell.
I need to see it in my imagination—and then I’ll understand it.
Use analogies. Use personal experiences. Use details, and make me see, touch, taste, smell, and feel the story.
Like Jesus and his parables, be the best story-teller in the world.
Don’t say it’s impossible. Hone your craft!
Fifth, don’t forget my needs.
You may criticize Mike Velarde for his neon-colored barong, but you have to admit that he’s an incredibly effective speaker. (Proof? 300,000 people gather in front of him every week voluntarily.)
Why? He always speaks with their problems in his mind.
Your audience is a bunch of people that have debts to pay, fears about their kids, burdened by marital fights, suffer from hypertension, arthritis, migraine, and cancer.
Believe me, the Gospel of the day is very far from their minds.
So when you begin your homily by saying, “The Gospel for the day is about…” you tune out half of your audience.
Begin with where people are. And then talk about how the Gospel addresses their problems.
Sixth, speak more than fifteen only if you’re really good
A fifteen-minute talk is purgatory if you’re boring.
But a thirty-minute talk from an excellent preacher is bitin.
So if you know you’re still growing in the skill of preaching, shorten your homilies. Some great preachers are even known for the brevity of their talks.
Many love (adore, worship) Bishop Soc Villegas’ three-minute sermons, which I compare to solid punches to one’s solar plexus. On target, every time—with the least amount of words.
Seventh, be real.
Tell me a bit of your struggles. Your sins. Your temptations.
Tell me about the problems you go through.
I need to know you’re just like me—needing God at every breath.
Open up and I’ll open up to your message.
Doing so will make you cease being another statue in church.
You’ll become a friend.
Eight, speak from your passion.
I’m not talking about bombast.
You could speak very quietly, but I know if you’re speaking from an inner passion—or if you’re speaking from your head and your hastily prepared notes.
This is probably the most important lesson in preaching.
Don’t talk about trust, or repentance, or love, or service—if you don’t feel a fire in your belly for trust, or repentance, or love, or service… It just won’t work.
People will know you’re a phony.
PREACHERS’ HABITS
I’ve been preaching for 25 years.
Here are some habits that have helped me through the years…
• Read as much as you breathe
• Listen to preaching videos and audiotapes
• Prepare your talks way in advance
• Most of all, deepen your relationship with God
The last point is decisive. I try (strive, strain, struggle, stumble) to strengthen my spiritual life. That’s where the passion comes from.
For without passion—a love for God and for others—the preacher is a noisy gong and a clanging bell.
PS. One of my dreams for next year under the Kerygma Family—A School for Catholic Leadership. One important Subject: how to preach! Pray for this. Join the Kerygma Family and be part of a growing ministry that will impact the world.
A School for Catholic Leadership - I hope it is online and downloadable!

ReplyDeleteIt Reminds me Of My Favorite Religious Congregation's Mission. "A Son of the Immaculate Heart (of Mary) is a man who sets fire wherever he goes. He desires mightily and strives by all means possible to set the whole world ablaze with the fire of (God's) love. Nothing (or nobody) daunts him: he delights in privations, welcomes work, (embraces) sacrifices, smiles amid whatever (calumnies) may arise, rejoices in the torments and sorrows he may suffer, and glories in the Cross of Jesus (Christ.) His only concern is how he may follow (Jesus) Christ. more nearly and imitate him in prayer, work, suffering, and (in) striving constantly and single mindedly for the greater glory of God. and the good of souls"
ReplyDeleteYes, I concur with junasis (2006-12-17 20:12:15) when he said. "I hope it is online and downloadable!"
ReplyDeleteThat way we can easily refresh ourselves each time we're tempted to do things our way.
Pray it'll also be interactive.
May God bless this noble project and provide all the avenues for its immediate implementation.
I pray with you Bo and agree with you that your dream will come to reality.
GOD BLESS YOU WELL.

Bro Bo, I'm a local preacher for El Shaddai community and is at present serving the Lord here in United Arab Emirates. It would really be helpful for me and for my fellow local preachers if the School for Catholic Leadership could be accesible on line and each subject/s or course/s could also be downloadable because it would be very difficult for us to attend full time because of our jobs. We will pray with you for the success and realization of this vision. God Bless
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I happened to stumble on this site only this time.
ReplyDeleteGreat thing. This is what I have been waiting for so long!
This School for Catholic Leadership is a brilliant idea. There are soooo many Catholic preachers, even non-catholics out here in the field who need training but lack the time, resources and support, but they are still at it--pure grace!
Perhaps an organized circle of Catholic preachers interactive is something your site could also offer soon.
Oh, Bo, TOYM awardee or not, just continue to be a blessing to all of us, particularly preachers.
GodLove.
Can I use this material in my circle of influence? I found this very helpful and I want to share it for free to my friends. Please?
ReplyDeletehi Bo...
ReplyDeletevery happy to find your blog, site and video... its very helping me here
i'm from Indonesia, i've watched you once in Jakarta while you preached at St.Theresia last November
i'm starting to learn preach here and your site is like bless for me...
thanks Bo...
keep preach in your blue jeans ya...
God Bless You =)
Bro. Bo
ReplyDeleteI think a "School for Catholic Leadership " is a good idea. I hope and pray that it will aterialize soon. God Bless and more power to you and the Kerygma community.
(I dont know if this is a comment or something, but please "waste" your time on this)
ReplyDeleteKuya Bo, I know you have received so many compliments, praises of admiration and appreciation. I hope you wont get tired of them because here's another more. I just want you to know how inspired I am to develop more of my speaking skills and learn more about creative writing because of you. I always read your corner in the CBCP monitor. I love your way of sending out the good news to your readers. And now you speak about being a preacher. This is the most practical guidelines I ever read about preaching. Every MWF, in our group we are asked to share about the gospel. Honestly, I ussaully start it with "our gospel today is about". Maybe its time to change it. Hmmm...not maybe but yes its time to change it.
Thank you Kuya Bo.
A "School for Catholic Leadership" will be very helpful in propagating God's Words more effectively. I just hope that the female populace may likewise be welcome to be part of this school.
ReplyDeleteMore and More of God's blessings be upon you Bro. Bo!
Gusto ko po sanang sumali sa School for Catholic Leadership kaya lang po baka sa Manila lang yan. Sa Cebu po kasi ako nakatira eh. Sana umabot din po kayo sa lugar namin... God Bless!
ReplyDeleteI THINK OUR PARISH PRIEST NEEDS THIS.. INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT ASKING FOR DONATIONS AND DOLE OUTS... sheesh... I THINK THE BETTER WAY FOR HIM TO GET MORE MONEY FROM PARISHIONERS IS TO BE MORE OF AN EFFECTIVE SPEAKER... but i guess it's tough to be a priest eh? I totally understand... Rock On Preachers!!
ReplyDeletei know it well help a lot of young people like me na gusto rin maging katulad mo. and it really make sense talaga po to have your website like this.sa mga tulad ko na nasa middle stage of journey kay God your articles and everything on your website could really help me as well as others who are finding ways to strenghten their relationship to God.With passion, love and keen interest I know someday I can also be someone who will really enjoy sharing stories and gospels of God. More power to you Sir and God bless.
ReplyDeleteThis is one thing that's lacking in our priests--the skill of an effective communicator. I wonder if whne you're schooling for priesthood they offer speech and theater arts subjects. Because whether we like it or not, the message is only as good as the way it is delivered.
ReplyDeleteType your comment here.i like that and i do think you should be on the same level as all in the church or how can you relate!
ReplyDeletewe need to feel the pain in the church not think we are above any one GOD called us all he ordained us all that listen not man! man has nothing to do with telling if you can preach we all have a story!i have seen men sign a paper for some one they harly know, saying its ok to preach why is that?

Hi Bro. Bo
ReplyDeleteThis article was great and timely.
I can relate to it, most of the youths are converted because of boring homilies, so if a school for preaching will be established, it will be a bongang blessings for the church.
May i be like you Bro. Bo.

Dear Bo,
ReplyDeletethank you for this, i dreamt that God is telling me to be a preacher, but i don't know why and how i will do this, but I know in HIS time, He'll lead me into it
Helo Kuya Bro. Bo,
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to be a preacher. Sometimes I wanted to be on remote areas just to spread the words of God.
But i realized that how can i share them the good news when i myself don\'t have that traits of a good preacher. That i myself have cause many sufferings for my salf and family. That i myself do not practice any acts of a true Christian.
What fool am i to preach that i myself not true and honest in myself. Sometimes, i ask, though i really be in quite place, on mountain perhaps to just feel what really God wants for my life, to just know what i reaaly want to be, what really want makes me on peace. But now, through your words, im doing small things that makes me feel worthy and realizing that I don\'t need to be alone for me to be able find God and feel inner peace. That\'s why i decided to be a part of Kerygma Family and now im taking step-by-step by attending in your FEAST, that will surely lead me in God\'s ways, and by then i can be a preacher too like you.
Thank you very much cause you truly inspires me to be with God
nice to. knw ur planning to have a school for catholic school leadership. Fortunately, i was able to attend a certificate program for catholic school leadership sponsored by CEAP last apr 15 - apr 30 , 2009. I really appreciated it so much because it has given me inspirations on how i can truly lead as an educator with everything i learned from mentors of different sectors. There are times, i speak and sound like a preacher. but this is one of my dreams and that is to preach. I knw God will allow it to happen if this is what best fits me. As an administrator and a teacher i never get tired of giving advicesand counselling to my subordinates and students. So, i pray that d school u desire becomes a reality.
ReplyDeletei want to preach... I'm praying that soon i'll be able to do that.. i hope that someday the desire of my heart will be granted... May God keep the burning compassion of my heart.. May He give me the strenght and the will power to do what my heart longs to do...
ReplyDeleteVery interesting points. As a modern day Jonah, may I attest that what you instruct is true? May I also confess that when those of us that are "called" to exhort the Gospel run from our responsibility then sometimes less exhilarating orators fill the pulpits by which they sometimes hide behind.
ReplyDeleteYour words are strangely inspiring as they are a reminder that preaching the Word of Christ is less about form and much more about "anointed" function. As God used the rocks to speak when no one was willing, so will He raise up Christian leaders to spread the good news.
I couldn't agree with your assessment of much of modern preaching and I enjoyed your sense of sarcasm and I too, would agree in spirit that there is a certain sincerity in your jest.
As stated above, I am a modern day Jonah. It is time for me to honor the calling God has placed upon my life and proclaim the reality of His life, death and resurrection and the eternal victory of receiving Christ.
What is it about all the "theologists" that seem to have forgotten the Gospel presentation is real simple: Who is Christ? What does he do? Why does he matter? What does he want?
And, when will I stop hearing that salvation is free? It isn't free, it will cost you everything, including your life, as Christ willingly gave his. Zig Ziglar can preach more honestly than that.
I have no Divinity degree nor have I attended seminary but that doesn't mean I'm unwilling to study, pray, meditate on the word, and boldly preach. It is difficult to sit with professors when you've been hiding in the belly of a big fish for most of your adult life. So then, now what? Wait until a University can "accredit" me? I respect and admire well read theologians and appreciate their knowledge, but apart from the Holy spirit their knowledge is useless.
Too many well meaning people stand on the river banks watching the bodies float by, plucking them out as fast as they can but few have the fear and courage to fight the current and walk upstream and prevent the people from falling in to begin with. That is preaching. That is evangelism. That is what Christ died proclaiming.
To God be all the glory.
Be amazing today.
Third paragraph above should have said, "I couldn't agree MORE..."
ReplyDeleteHello Bro. Bo,
ReplyDeleteI noticed it has been three years since you made this interesting post. Thanks so much!
You see I just came from Mass earlier today. I was wondering how could I make an interesting preaching if I were the priest. So, when I arrived at home, I went to Google and typed "boring preaching catholic" and am so glad I found your post on the first page. It made my research easy!
It may interest you to know that it has only been three months since I came back to the Catholic Church after regularly attending born-again churches for 18 years. I think it's rare to find a boring preacher among born-again pastors. And it's the other way around among Catholic priests.
Am so glad you and Bro. Mike Velarde are good models for our Catholic priests.
By the way, am interested on this subject of preaching lately because am honing my skills on writing articles for the internet. My internet marketing guru rejected 5 out of 10 articles I submitted to him last week. So, am now dissecting what makes an interesting preaching and writing.
Am making a list of good preachers and writers I know from both Catholics and Evangelicals and of course you are on top of my list. Side by side with that list is another list of the boring preachers I know. Am looking at the contrast. Actually, my study is made much easier now because of your very useful post.
Thanks so much.
God bless.
Jose
P.S. By the way, my bed-ridden 87-year old aunt regularly listens to your 8 AM program during Sundays on Radio Veritas. I also "introduced " you to my born-again pastor friend and he likes your writings. You are indeed a blessing to many people in ways more than you can imagine. God bless you and your ministry.
It sounds like the real problem is with the guy in the pew. Get over yourself.
ReplyDeleteI used to be your fan since i was in high school. Now, 20 years later i still want to be like you.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you more
Bo
I have been searching far and wide for a school like what you hope to start next year. People over at CFA will tell you the same, as I have asked Tina and Rissa a couple of times if you have a program for those who love to preach. So I am praying with you.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you!
Hi! I think that school would be very helpful. I am also a would-be preacher. I was wondering how I could start to do this plan. It's so nice to hear you preach, Bro. Bo.
ReplyDeleteI love your tips for those who wants to preach. I wish God will use me to spread his word. God Bless Bro Bo! Thank you so much.
ReplyDeletei love those tips...sounds great...God bless Bro..
