Don’t Limit Yourself

Your Size Doesn’t Matter;

What Matters Is The Size Of Your Dream

I just read the biography of John Gokongwei, The Path of Entrepreneurship.

It’s an incredible story.

Did you know that on his 80th birthday, he gave away half of his billions to charity? I want to do exactly the same thing when I reach 80. (I’ve got a few more years to earn my billions.)

A few weeks ago, I visited San Carlos University in Cebu.

I saw first hand a beautiful, massive school building donated by John Gokongwei—to the tune of P150 Million. He’s also donated other buildings to Ateneo de Manila and Sacred Heart School in Cebu.

Not bad for a guy who was selling peanuts at the backyard of his home.

Actually, John Gokongwei was born to a rich family. His father owned a chain of movie houses. A chauffeur drove him to school. And in school, he had lots of friends because he would invite them to watch movies for free.

But when he was 13, his father suddenly died of typhoid. Because his father’s empire was built on credit, they lost everything—the businesses, the house, the cars…

“When the free movies disappeared, I lost half of my friends,” he said.

When John had to walk 2 miles to school for the first time, he cried to his mother. But she said, “You should feel lucky. Some people have no shoes to walk to school.”

The 13-year-old John was forced to work.

He woke up at 5am to bike to the market with his basket of goods. There he set up a tiny table to sell soap, candles, and thread.

In 1943, he expanded his business. From Cebu, he would transport tires on a small boat called a batel to Manila. That was a five-day journey! And in Manila, he would buy goods he could bring back and sell in Cebu.

Fast forward today and John Gokongwei leads a multi-billion empire consisting of Cebu Pacific, Sun Cellular, Universal Robina, Robinsons malls, and a host of other companies. (I like Jack n Jill snacks, so I’m a fan.)

How did that happen? How could Cebu Pacific (the airline that made flights so affordable) start from selling peanuts? How could Robinsons malls start from a tiny table in a palengke?

Simple: John Gokongwei started small but dreamt big. His dream was so powerful, it fueled his daily life. He worked hard to make his dreams come true.

And that’s a universal principle you can bring to the bank.

Do you want to succeed in life?

Start small, dream big.

1) Start Small

I know one very impatient person who did the very opposite: He liked to start big. I saw this man everyday. When? When I see the mirror!

Yes, this is my weakness, and I’ve paid dearly for it. But I’m learning. Here’s the reason why we need to start small: Because at the start of our learning curve, we will fail. You can bet your life on that. Beginners will fail, period. But if we start small, our failures won’t crush us. But if we start big right away, our failures will be big too, and we may give up. Believe me, in my businesses, I’ve lost millions because I didn’t know how to start small. I will never forget this lesson because of my very high tuition fees!

2) Dream Big

I know some people who dream small dreams.

And these small dreams don’t happen. Because from the very start, they’re not exciting enough. So they don’t even take off.

Here’s what I found out: Small dreams attract small men. Big dreams attract big men. As well as all the big resources of the universe.

In my ministry work for the Lord, I’ve learned that its easier to raise P1 Million than P100,000. And it’s easier to raise P10 Million than P1 Million.

Friend, your size doesn’t matter.

What matters is the size of your dream.

As you focus and work on your dream, you grow as big as your dream.

As you grow your dream, you also keep growing.

As you expand your dream, you also keep expanding.

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

PS. Do you want to reach your financial dreams? On March 1 (8:30am to 12noon) I’m giving my powerful How To Be Truly Rich Seminar. By the way, I give this Seminar to companies at P7,000++ per person, but because I want to help more people, I give this Seminar to the public at the subsidized cost of P475 only. (Yes, that’s not a typo.) Bonus: You join the Truly Rich Club.

And for a select group of people who are very serious about reaching their financial dreams, my own Financial Mentors and I will give 2 days of intensive training that we call the Truly Rich Financial Coaching Program. It will be on March 2 (2pm to 9pm) and 5 (9am to 4pm), 2008. We shall show you how you can invest in mutual funds, stock market, real estate, and your own businesses.

If each of our mentors charged for the time spent coaching you (compared to how much they earn in their own businesses), the Truly Rich Coaching Program would be priced at P95,000.00++! But because of their desire to give back and help others, most of our mentors give their time for free. To get into the coaching program, your investment is only 5% of that figure, or P5,975 only (Please add P1000 for 2 power lunches and 2 snacks). This is a huge steal. (We reserve the right to change this price at anytime.) We highly encourage married couples to attend this program together, so you’ll be of one mind and heart in your path towards financial abundance. Married Couple rate is P9,975 only.

CRAZY 100% Money Back Guarantee + P500!

If at anytime along this Program, you feel you didn’t learn anything to improve your financial life, just tell us—we will return 100% of your tuition fee—no questions asked. That’s how much we believe in the wealth education of our program. In fact, we’re so serious with this offer, we’ll even add P500 more, for your inconvenience and your loss of time in attending this Coaching Program.

Don’t delay. First come, first served. Once we reach our needed number for the Wealth Group, we stop accepting applicants. Call up Beckie at Tel. (02) 7229562 (Tuesdays-Fridays 9:00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.) right away before you run out of seats (we always do). Or email her at beaconlightevents@gmail.com Only those who take action succeed in life. So contact us now.

PS2.Workshop on Effective Cell Group Leading

(Mar. 1, Saturday, 8am – 5pm)

(Facilitators: Arun Gogna and Jon Escoto)

Seminar fee: P695 only

People grow in small groups! Churches grow because of small groups! Research says small groups are a key indicator of church health. In the face of an impersonal internet society, the need to understand the dynamics of small groups is great. One truth that has emerged from this small group movement is that there is no right way to do small groups. This seminar will coach small group leaders on creating fresh ideas for small group meetings. Workshops will focus on facilitating and communication skills. This workshop is a must to strengthen your community.

Venue for all seminars: Lay Force, San Carlos Seminary, Guadalupe Makati.

Discounts will be given to early registrants and groups.

  10. hi bo!

i would like to thank for soulfood email. I am a secretary of a newly organized oraganization here in まjapan.

this organization has very ambitious goals. we are presently attached to our local church here but aside from supporting the church activities we hope to help our fellow filipinos here in theres of their temporal needs and legal matters such as visas, working conditions, maltreatment of employers and abuses of japanese nationals and a lot of forms of discrimination.
please advice us on how to handle this big dreams when some of the officers and members think that we are getting too far ane very ambitious that we can`t materialize this. only a few people believe in us. others just wait for results can`t materialize this. only a few people believe in us. others just wait for results.
we want to energize the group and plant the seed of faith in their hearts that we can do what we plan.

this is indeed an example of " love labor regained "! it's true, if we dream big , we reap big rewards. God helps those who help themseves...and there are really people who are born to be rich, i believe. everything they do prospers! and one thing am sure, these people have put God above all else in their lives. " Seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you..." says Jesus.
thanks once again ! may God inspire you more. may He bless you and your family.

  21. Hi brother Bo,

I have big dreams but do not dare to start small. Heck i do not dare to start even. Simple because i am afraid of failure and the concequences.

Anyhow. Your messages, when they reach me, i read with interest and joy.

I am not a Pinoy. No i am a Dutch man married to a Pinay and since last year a proud father of a now 5 months old daughter.

If you knew our story of me and my wife. Then we can concider ourselves rich. Not in finances. We are not rich, own a company.

No..we are rich because we my wife and i are finally since december 2006 together for good. This after a long time of living forced seperated by Dutch laws and having no work. But i don't go into details here too much.

Yes i have big dreams and don't dare to take the first step. By starting even. Or even make an attempt to move. And i think many people have that too. Isn't that sad brother Bo?

I think it is. But reading your message. My heart lifts up. And i noticed that i even have bigger dreams then the dreams i thought where already to big. So what will i do next....

I make a plan. And stick to it. But stay flexible as well. So that my dreams may come true.

Thanks for being a guide. A friend from far.

God bless. Please keep on writting.

  23. I was inspired by the story. I somewhat felt guilty, I don't dream big, being simple is okay for me. But the story helped me further dream of something big for myself and family. Thanks a lot! God bless! :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is really true! I've always think and tell myself and also to others that "We are only limited by our own imagination." For me, this means that no matter how small you are you can dream big, you can dream as far as your imagination can reach. Wherever your imagination can bring you, it will come true.... with passion, great desire and with God. Dreaming is for free anyway, so why dream small? when you can DREAM BIG! :)

I always remember what I heard from a homily when I was still younger and just graduated from college, the priest said "Big things starts from small things".

  25. GOKONGWEI got rich by cheating a lot of decent people. Gokongwei's God is money and nothing else but money. That's why he was not successful in his bid for directorship of San Miguel Corporation and PLDT. Knowledgeable businessmen are aware that Gokongwei is a bad fat wolf now pretending to be a sheep. His autobiography is a self serving book trying to deodorize his stinking deeds and past. Even the Robinson's Department store name is copied from Robinson's Department Store abroad. Gokongwei is one person who will not think twice in cheating other person just to make money. All his actions are made to fool people and benefit himself.

  34. hi bro. bo,
this is re- andres' comment- God alone knows what's in the recesses of every man's heart. Jesus said, " don't judge and you will not be judged; for whatever measure you measure on others, will be measured back to you..." or when He said, " whoever among you has no sin, will cast the first stone..." nobody did, and each one parted different ways. Jesus said, " I came to this world, not for the just, but for sinners to repentance. " it's comforting to know that He only needs our repentance for our sins, He will forget everything! we're already saved by the Lamb of God, ours is to make avail of His undying Love!
time to focus on ourselves rather than judging others. life is too short, they say, should be spent for the quest for Salvation.
thanks once more for this space.
    God bless you more...

    hi bro. bo,
thank you for the daily inspirational messages. i does help me alot. at times, timely for my problems... it makes me thick and reflect before making a big decision, of prayer is always my initial step in solving any problem.
sorry, I am not able to meet my monthly donation yet. I am in a financial dilemma wherein my take home pay can no longer take me home because all is used for paying my debts. but i still would want to keep my promise that as soon as i am already capable of doing so, you will be among those i would want to help. help me pray for financial assistance, guidance and (hopefully) provisions.
i am really interested in attending your Seminar for "How to be TRULY RICH", but my financial standing will not permit me to attend. I cannot afford right now.
anyway, God bless to you all... and please always be an inspiration not to a few but to many. And I am glad I am one of the many....

For so long I've been limiting my dreams because as a female, i don't want to be perceived as extremely ambitious. But I don't care anymore. As you said, if in the end that KIND of WEALTH will benefit more people, I'd rather laugh on the way to the bank than be miserable with my smallish dreams. More power Bo!!!
