How P20 Grew To Millions

When You Give To God, He Blesses You

So You Can Give Even More!

It all started with P20.

In 1979, Rey Ortega was having breakfast with 4 friends.

While reading the newspaper, his eye caught an article about 200,000 out-of-school streetkids in Metro Manila.

The figure blew his mind. He couldn’t believe it. 200,000 kids on the streets?

He told his 4 friends about it and pulled out his wallet. “Look, I have an extra P20 here. We may not be able to help 200,000 streetkids, but if we chip in, we can send at least one of these kids back to school.”

Immediately, his friends agreed. And together, they marched to Tipas elementary school in Taguig, Rizal.

They talked to the Principal and asked, “Do you know of a student graduating from Grade 6 who can’t go on to High School because of poverty?”

The Principal said yes. “Her name is Rodora Lopez.”

So Rey sent Rodora to school.

The following year, he sent another one.

The year after that, he sent another.

And he has not stopped ever since.

Today, Rey has produced 54 college graduates. They are CPA’s, cum laude’s from UP, and top 10 board placers.

He has sent 5 poor kids to school from families devastated by Mt. Pinatubo.

And 8 poor kids from families crushed by flash floods in Infanta.

And 7 kids from blind families in Antipolo.

And 5 poor young seminarians want to be priests.

As if this wasn’t enough, Rey began an orphanage last year.

He didn’t want these kids roaming in the streets. He wanted to give them a home. So he and his wife opened their own home to 10 orphans!

Thankfully, they now have a separate house for the orphanage. They now care for 19 orphans.

It hasn’t been an easy path.

In its previous location, his orphanage was in a subdivision. But 88 Homeowners in that subdivision signed a 3-page “rejection” letter, refusing to have an orphanage in their village. The news crushed him.

But Rey prayed for another place that would welcome God’s little children. Recently, he found another place—very near our FEAST in Pasig. Very soon, the kids can walk to the FEAST every Sunday for our children’s ministry. It was a great blessing in disguise.

For a long time, Rey was running a one-man show. Being a businessman, he had the money to fund his work for God. Just last year, from his own pocket alone, he spent more than a half a million pesos for his orphanage and his scholars.

So you can imagine, from his first P20 in 1979, he has now given millions away. (Not to mention his sweat, blood, and tears.) But that’s how God has prospered Rey’s own business since 1979.

Yes, God provides for his work.

I believe that this is the purpose of wealth.

God will enrich us so that we can give more.

When you give, He will prosper the work of your hands.

Rey’s friends have not stopped helping him either. With much patience, he knocked on doors, called up friends, and wrote many letters. Last year, they were able to raise P830,000 for his scholars.

But today, the children’s needs have grown far beyond what Rey or his friends can fund themselves.

So I’ve partnered with Rey.

He is now a member of my community, the Light of Jesus. We have made him in charge of our own scholarship program. And we’ve adapted his work as our own. KerygmaFamily.com will provide funds for both the scholarship program and the orphanage.

Rey is a very special man.

His passion, his courage, and his love for the poor blesses me so much.

So the list of our work for the poor is growing, and I’m very happy.

Here they are:

o Anawim, our home for the elderly. We care for 60 abandoned elderly in Montalban, Rizal. We provide shelter, food, medical care, and Christian love to those who have been forgotten by their families and society.

o He Cares, our ministry for streetkids. Founded by my friend Jodean Sola, he sends 230 streetkids to school, feeds 600 streetkids each week, oversees a relocation housing project for 120 families, and a micro-lending livelihood program for 130 mothers of streetkids. (I’ve been working with Jodean for the past 20 years now, and I’ve always been inspired by this big-hearted man. I’ll write about him next time.)

o ALAY, Rey Ortega’s scholarship program for 49 children, and Tahanan ng Pagmamahal orphanage of 19 children.

o Gawad Kalinga Village in Montalban, Rizal—120 homes.

o My community also does regular Prison Ministry in the women’s correctional here in Mandaluyong.

Everything big can start with P20.

Because as we give the little we have, God will bless us abundantly.

I want you to pray if God wants you to help us help others. If you hear His voice saying “Yes”, log on to www.kerygmafamily.com and be part of our borderless, international, non-physical family that wants to change the world for Jesus. As a way of saying thank you for your monthly love offering, I shall supply you with a mountain-load of spiritual nourishment everyday.

As Rey Ortega says, you don’t have to help 200,000 streetkids.

You just need to help one child…

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

PS. In 1979, Rey sent to school his first scholar, Rodora Lopez. Today, she is works in Canada, very far from the poverty that she was trapped in as a Grade 6 child. Rey’s P20 changed her life. Your little gift can do that too. If you want to do what Rey did, log on to www.kerygmafamily.com now. Our goal is to give 50% of our funds to evangelism and 50% to our work for the poor.

PS2. Change your financial life! Learn how to gain financial freedom this year. On March 1 (8:30am to 12noon) I’m giving my powerful How To Be Truly Rich Seminar. By the way, I give this Seminar to companies at P7,000++ per person, but because I want to help more people, I give this Seminar to the public at the subsidized cost of P475 only. (Yes, that’s not a typo.) Bonus: You join the Truly Rich Club

Aside from this seminar, my own Financial Mentors will give 2 days of intensive training that we call the Truly Rich Financial Coaching Program. It will be on March 2 (2pm to 9pm) and 5 (9am to 4pm), 2008. We shall show you how you can invest in mutual funds, stock market, real estate, and your own businesses.

If each of our mentors charged for the time spent coaching you (compared to how much they earn in their own businesses), the Truly Rich Coaching Program would be priced at P95,000.00++! But because of their desire to give back and help others, most of our mentors give their time for free. To get into the coaching program, your investment is only 5% of that figure, or P5,975 only (Please add P1000 for 2 power lunches and 2 snacks). This is a huge steal. (We reserve the right to change this price at anytime.) We highly encourage married couples to attend this program together, so you’ll be of one mind and heart in your path towards financial abundance. Married Couple rate is P9,975 only.

CRAZY 100% Money Back Guarantee + P500!

If at anytime along this Program, you feel you didn’t learn anything to improve your financial life, just tell us—we will return 100% of your tuition fee—no questions asked. That’s how much we believe in the wealth education of our program. In fact, we’re so serious with this offer, we’ll even add P500 more, for your inconvenience and your loss of time in attending this Coaching Program.

Don’t delay. First come, first served. Once we reach our needed number for the Wealth Group, we stop accepting applicants. Call up Beckie at Tel. (02) 7229562 right away before you run out of seats (we always do). Or email her at beaconlightevents@gmail.com Only those who take action succeed in life. So contact us now.

  11. Thank you for the story of Bro. Rey. It strengthened my resolve to continue sending students at least to high school and some to college. This I have started in the late 1990s when I decided to pay the tuition of an indigent high school student rather than spend the money for my birthday. And it has been going on since then . And I testify that I never run out finances to pay for my students' tuition fees even at times when I do not have a paying job. The Father up there always provides...with jobs I do not expect. Keep up your work, Bro Bo and Bro. Rey. God bless you!!

  17. hi Mr. Bo! i'm truly inspired by the story of bro. rey. helping the less fortunate countrymen esp. kids has always been my dream since i was young (younger than now). like building homes for the homeless kids. unfortunately, due to lack of monetary resource i am hurdled to give more. Now, that i belong to your kerygma family, i hope my lil share in sustaining funds for your charitable deeds would somehow help a person change his life. and if everything goes well in my career i'll surely give more.!

keep it up! and more power!

i hope i can attend one of your seminars in the future. i'd ljust love to see u in person... :)

  19. hi bro. bo,
it's true indeed, that when we offer our 3T's to God, out time, talent and treasure, we not only help others and ourselves spiritually, but we find the true joy of giving, for in doing so, we encounter our God Who is the Author of love. He will in return take care of our needs, we will not find ourselves wanting, always, He will provide, always @ your side, as we put our trust in His Providence, His Fatherly love.
thanks so much for this wonderful article.
    may He inspire you more.
God bless you and your family.

  20. Hi, Bo!

Im truly amazed how passionate you are in your ministry. You are such an admirable person. God really works in you. I wonder how someone like me can be of service to others especially the less privileged because my heart goes with the abandoned children and elderly. Unlike us, the children (are not yet able) and elderly (can no longer) provide for themselves so i believe that it is our Christian obligation to tender these God's flock. However, much as i want to, I am also a mother who has to break my neck to work so that i can provide the needs of my family. My husband and I try to make both ends meet with our little earnings. Most of the time, we have to deal with deficits (our expenses are greater than our earnings.) I feel frustrated everytime somebody asks for financial assistance and I can't lend a peso. My heart breaks when I see sick, malnourished, deformed infants/children in Quiapo underpass, streets, terminals held by their parents asking for alms. I want to get angry with the mothers who exposed their children to such humiliating, degrading situation. But on the other hand, I know that most of these mothers have no one to go to for help except to beg for little help from people who might give small amount out of pity.

I feel guilty to a lot of things, simply because I can't give financial assistance to those who are in dire need or at least do something for them. But charity begins at home, Before I look for the welfare of other people, I must see to it that I do not neglect the welfare of my family. Considering the limited earnings my husband and I have at present, I can only feel for others' miseries. I hope time will come that I can give concrete actions that will make a difference in others' lives.

By the way, Im a school counselor. I try to be of service to others by being true to the profession. But come to think of it, Im being paid to help. How I wish I can be of help without getting paid. However, reality sets in.. I must work to earn for a living.

May God bless you more and more. I marvel how you and the likes of Rey do your ministry because just like others, you are a family man with kids and wife to care for.

    Godspeed!

  24. hi bro. bo.. i am a fan, if the term is appropriate.im a student from FEU, taking up Nursing. i'm 19 years old. i was reading Kerygma since i was in my elementary days. those are late issues.. given by our neighbors. i just so love to read.. and i have known you through that. i don't know where to mail you so i decided to just write you here. it takes several years before the second time i had an encounter with you.. that was november 2007 (take note of your kerygma issue then). and then i bought your books: how to be really, really, really happy. fill your life with miracles. you have the power to create love. my dad, like your friend, invested so much to give joys to kids/youth ages 10-17.. but it is more than joy.. it's more of love. he gave so much for the kids to learn, to have fun, to know God. it is not education.. he's not giving out scholarships. for four years, he dedicated his time.. his life.. his own/personal money to let the youth experience the things they haven't experienced in their life.. we call it a SUMMER YOUTH CAMP, wherein kids ages 10-17 from different provinces (Quezon, Pampanga, Bulacan, Pangasinan and here at Manila) will live together for a month.. approximately there number ranges from 100-200 people. last year, my father personally gave me advices, taught me, trained me to work on this project... my dad passed away last november 27.. isang nakakabiglang sitwasyon.. hindi lang sa aming pamilya kundi pati sa aming komunidad.. we are not catholics, we are not christians. but we are a beliver of God. the same God you worship and you love. and i wonder.. with your busy schedule how to reach you. i want you.. to touch the lives of so many children too.. just like the way you touch and helped me. you helped me decide to pursue on my father's advocacy.. and with the current situation.. my dad no longer around.. i needed someone to help me.. talk or inspire.. one of these days.. i would to come to you and approach you.. and talk about this.. God bless you Bro. Bo. Thank you so much for sharing your gift. and for loving us.

  25. hi bro. bo,
Jesus said, " the poor will always be with you." Mother Teresa says, " Jesus is in the guise of the poor." the priest said, " give until it hurts, give from your source, not from your surplus." i believe in that, since, even if we have surplus sometimes, it wouldn't still be enough, for our needs will also increase. so the secret and the key to more blessings, in order to be able to help others and ourselves, is giving from our source. always set aside an amount from your paycheck for sunday collection, even if you still have other bills to pay, you'll see how your money grows, making it possible to increase your giving from time to time. am not rich, but ever since i followed this teaching, God has always come to the rescue, always on time, when i'm in need. trust our Heavenly Father with childlike confidence and your blessings will grow.
    thanks once more.
God bless you & your family

  26. this is indeed a God's work in presence.

One time I was depressed, then my younger sister lent me a book.."He's the BOSS".. I thought you are the boss in here haha XD. but si God pala, I was 3rd year back then, i really look down on myself that time.. I was fascinated and motivated by how you see God in your life.. It so great! astig! haha XD.. Then when I heard you'll speak in our school[Lourdes School of Quezon City] with 2 foreigner speakers[i forgot their names], i was very excited.. and so on..

and then now.. I signed in Kerygma family.. but i feel so sorry if i can't donate.. I'm 17 freshman at San Beda.. but it's not an excuse.. Through being a youth leader in our parish[coordinator of the altar servers too], i'm very happy that God gave me an opportunity to serve my fellow unfortunate brothers..

    more power for God's Glory!
