4 Big Things I Will Do Before I Hit 50

Some Things Just Can’t Be Postponed!

Sometimes, I can’t believe I’m 41.

Jeepers, I’ll be 42 this July.

Not too long ago, I was a 13 year-old skinny kid preaching to a roomful of ancient adults. For years, I was always the youngest in the room.

Wherever I went, they called me, “Bo Sanchez, a young Preacher…” Recently, I’m quickly losing that title. People just call me, “Bo Sanchez, a Preacher…”

Ouch. Quietly, the word “Young” has been dropped.

Oh, once in awhile, it still happens. Like when I was introduced by a guy who was 86. I think he called everyone young.

But that’s not too bad.

Would you believe I now have meetings where I’m the oldest in the room? I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.

And this is what scared me: One of these days, I’ll be announcing in this newsletter that I’ll be 50.

My gosh, that’s just 8 years from now!

Do you know that 8 years is nothing?

In a wink, 8 years will pass, and kaboom—I’ll be half-a-century old.

Hey, don’t get me wrong.

I believe 50 is young today. (Ask Edu Manzano.)

There was a time when 50 was ancient.

Not anymore.

My father died at 88.

So if I hit 50, that still gives me 38 fantastic years!

That’s a lot.

I can still write a lot more books (2 to 3 a year) and preach a lot more talks (300+ a year). I can still have a lot more dates with my lovely wife (52 a year—and that’s the minimum!).

But I realize now that I have 4 big goals before I hit 50—because I may not be able to do these things after I hit 50. All these 4 biggies are time sensitive and have tight deadlines.

Here are my 4 golden goals before I reach 50:

1) I’ll play with my kids more

2) I’ll date my mother more

3) I’ll build my investments more

4) I’ll build my health more

First Goal: I’ll Play with My Kids More

My supercharged, nuclear-powered boys are 8 and 3 today.

So everyday, they ask me, “Daddy, can you play with me?”

But when I hit 50, they’ll be 16 and 11.

Yikes. There’ll be teenagers in my house!

By that time, I don’t think they’ll be asking me to play with them that often (Unless it’s tennis or badminton or something like that).

Honestly, now that their 8 and 3, I don’t welcome their question every single time they ask me to play with them. Because often, I’m buried in my work.

I work from home.

And we don’t send our kids to school but homeschool them ourselves. (Crazy, huh. We’ve been doing it for four years now and have seen the great fruit of homeschooling. If you want to know the 16 reasons why I homeschool our kids, read my article at www.catholicfilipinoacademy.com You’ll also learn the 10 powerful principles of homeschooling.)

So unless I have meetings or talks, I’m at home with my kids.

And whenever I’m home, my boys would come up to me often and ask, “Daddy, can you play with me?”

Sometimes, it’s pokemon cards.

Sometimes, it’s cars and rocket ships.

Sometimes, it’s a computer game.

Sometimes, it’s a wrestling match on the floor.

I decided long ago that should they ask me that question, my answer should always be Yes. Not later. Not tomorrow. Not next week.

Just a simple, happy, beautiful Yes.

Even if every part of me wants to say, “No! Can’t you see I’m busy? Can’t you see I’m saving the world? Can’t you see I’m writing a book that will be read by a million people? Can’t you see that I’m helping the Pope run the Catholic Church? Can’t you see I’m building the Kingdom of God and without me, this universe will fall into the abyss of eternal Hell?”

I don’t say any of that silliness.

All I do is beam a smile at them and say, “Sure, son! What do you want to play?”

My plan is to keep saying Yes to that request while its there.

Because a day will come when they will no longer ask me that question.

Second Goal: I’ll Date My Mother More Often

Let me explain.

I’m the youngest of 6 kids, so Mom is 82.

She’s still as strong and bright as ever.

But that also means when I hit 50, she’ll be 90. (Hey, she could live until 110—which is great. But I’m hedging my bets.)

So this too is a time-sensitive goal.

Dad passed away last year, so Mom is mostly by herself.

Her friends are all dying out on her too.

Each morning, as morbid as this may sound (and believe me, we’ll all reach this stage), she checks the obituaries in the newspaper if another friend has died again. Sheesh.

So now, she has very few people to call up on the phone.

Except for her 6 children.

Who are caught up in their busy lives.

Especially her youngest boy who has become an International Preacher, Bestselling Author, and all-around Handsome Hunk whom girls can’t resist. (The last description is a result of my fasting too much this Lent.)

She sometimes calls me and I can’t be reached because I’m gallivanting somewhere in the world reaching to the lost.

But I’ve decided that this will be my second golden goal before I hit 50.

While Mom is still strong, I’ll call her up regularly, bring her out on dates, and take her along in some of my trips.

Like last year, I brought Mom with me in my US preaching trip. (Thank God for frequent flier miles!) She had a wonderful time meeting the few friends who were still alive and who can still carry an intelligent conversation. When they do talk, their topics revolve around their aches and pains, what medicines they take, their most interesting “senior citizen discount” stories, and the awards of their many grandchildren.

Mom loves to talk.

And I love to listen.

It’s a great combination.

Third Goal: I’ll Build My Investments More

They tell me that only 2% of people above the age of 65 are financially independent. That means 98% of elderly people have to depend on their relatives to survive, or live in charitable institutions (like our Anawim), or keep on working until their 80’s…

That’s tragic.

When I’m 70, I don’t want to be calling up my son, saying, “Uh son, can you give me and your mother… uh, some money to… uh, buy groceries? We’re down to our last can of sardines. If you won’t give us money today,we’ll be eating the expired noodles that were handed out last Christmas in Church…”

No way.

I don’t want to grow old.

I want to grow old and rich.

Correction.

I want to grow old and rich and generous!

Because I still believe that the purpose of wealth is to help others.

Look, it doesn’t take much to make millions if time is on your side.

Or billions, if you prefer. (I’m not kidding.)

Do you know that if you invest P1,000 a month at an equity fund or stock that grows at 12% per year, you’ll be a billionaire in 80 years?

I’m not kidding. Do the math.

I’m already 41, so If I invest P1,000 a month, I’ll be a billionaire when I reach 121 years old. Ha, I wonder how I’ll look like by that time.

But I don’t have to wait for that long.

Because I can invest more than a thousand bucks a month.

Much, much more.

So I won’t complain if by 80, I’ll have half-a-billion pesos.

I can live with that shortfall. Can you?

Do you also want to grow old and rich and generous?

Or do you just want to grow old?

The choice is yours.

(Note: If you want to know more about how to grow your money, attend my powerful and life-changing How To Be Truly Rich Seminar on April 5, 2008. You’ll learn how to expand your income. For more details, log on to www.bosanchez.ph/get-ready-for-abundance now!)

Fourth Goal: I’ll Build My Health More

Here’s my goal: I want to be strong until I’m 99 years old.

By that age, I’ll still be walking around with a sharp mind and a contagious laugh. I also want to die in my sleep and wake up in Heaven.

So I want to listen to my body more.

It’s just like my investments. What I do for my 40-year old body will show up magnified in my 80-year old body.

Little things count.

· I’ll do more breathing exercises

· I’ll drink more fresh water

· I’ll take more veggie juices

· I’ll eat more veggies and fruits

· I’ll exercise more

· I’ll rest, sleep, and take vacations more

· I’ll get rid of emotional garbage and think positively more

Speaking of health, I met a wonderful and wise 63-year old Wellness Teacher by the name of Amado Samia. I was very impressed as he shared with me the power of touch therapy and other ancient health techniques that are drawn from both science and faith. Yes, Amado is a committed Christian and marries what he teaches with Biblical truth.

Because I was going out of the country, I asked him to give his unique Wellness Seminar to my team. Needless to say, my team were wowed by their experience with Amado. They told me they learned how to heal themselves and how to stay healthy and happy. He’s a jewel.

(Note: I asked Amado to give another Wellness Seminar this May 17. If you want to join, email Beckie at beaconlightevents@gmail.com. She’ll send you a fuller description of his seminar.)

Preparing For the Second Half of My Life

Basically, this is what I’m doing.

I’ve got 8 more years to reach the mid-point of my life.

The first half of my life has been exceedingly happy.

By doing these 4 big goals, I prophesy that the second half of my life will even be happier and more successful.

Oh, by the way, when I reach 99—you can start calling me old.

Before that—don’t you dare!

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

  1. Thanks Bro. Bo for your timely reminders on what a father, a son, a bread-winner and a healthy person ought to focus more as we grow older (in the nicest sense of meaning : ) ).

    God bless.

  2. Bro. Bo,

12 years ago when I about to start my career I used to worked for people who is little bit older, but it pays off. It teaches me that life is too short to make mistakes, of course I'm not that perfect, but everytime I fall, I rise and learned from it. The good thing with older people I leraned a lot about life and how to enjoy it. You'll love your family twice you loved them before. One thing don't associate yourself to a foolish people. Thank for this Bro. Bo, when I reached 50 that would be a blessing...

  3. Thanks again, Bro. Bo...another beautiful inspiring insight. I'm a year older than you so I've only got 7 years before I turn 50. I keep thinking of spending $300 for Botox but I'd rather keep it and invest it somewhere else so I won't end up depending on my children when I retire. I'm also going to commit to dating my mom more often. Every weekend I visit my Lola who is 88 years old ... she's in a Convalescent home and is on a feeding tube. I copy TFC drama series for her and bring it to her so she can watch it. All I do is stay and watch a couple of series w/ her and that makes her happy.

  5. Hi Bo,

Great, simply great and inspiring! I am 60 years old and its only now that I am giving my health serious attention. I got so buried in my career, church and civic activities that I neglected what is essential for my physical health.

I am a big saver, and I thought that was smart. Until I attended your seminar on getting rich, and I learned all about mutual funds and equity funds. thanks Bo now I am investing in mutual funds, much to the dismay of the banks who used to exploit my savings with stupid interest rates.

    God bless. Rey

  6. Gosh... I lost track of time...It's inevitable that we will reach the age when we could no longer do the things we do today. I could not believe that my nieces and nephews are now college students... Where was I when they were still in kids? What have I been doing? Not only that, my parent's are now in there early 70's...What have I been doing these past years? I could not remember the last time I took them out for a simple dinner. Thanks Bo! You have awaken me from my sleep... I'll do the same things you have suggested... You're a blessing!

  12. hi bo, i read this article with much interest, thanks for making me realized the 'most important things', right now i'm in the stage that i'm always busy, i have a toddler, and i spent only few hours with her, mostly she's with her nanny or with granny, but i see to it that it's always quality time whenever i'm with her, good thing she's not yet 8 or 3, and i'm only 27 so i still have a lot of time to work hard to earn good, so when she hits that age, i will be able to say yes always, or most of the time, that will be my goal! thanks bo...

    p.s. your number 3 goal, i believe you originally want to say INDEPENDENT for this part;

''They tell me that only 2% of people above the age of 65 are financially dependent..."

  13. Bro. Bo,

Hi there! I can relate with you being "old". I'm 22 years old and in our youth ministry, I'm one of the "old" ones. I noticed this during group sharings. I am the now the one being appointed as a group leader because I seem to be the one with the most experiences in ministering to the youth. :)

May you continue to nouirish our souls with your works. Thanks a lot and God bless you always.

  15. Hi Bro. Bo,

Thank you for this wonderful article. This reminds me of the more important things that I should focus on before I reach the age of 50. I will share this with my husband so that he, too, would date his mom more and would always welcome the joy of playing with our son.

You're a blessing. God bless you and your family.

  19. Hi Bro. Bo! I'm so thankful and grateful for you're not getting tired of inspiring people like me. Your words really touch my heart and so, I'm so thankful to God for being a gift to us! I'll be turning 34 this April, I have a 2 year old son who's very energetic and so playful. I have many excuses when it comes to playing with him. But now I realize that time flies so fast so I should start spending quality time with him or else, I will have regrets in the end...thanks Bro for enlightening my mind....God Bless!

  20. I can't agree with you more, Brother Bo. I'm turning 35 in two months and I feel I've been racing with time for years already. I have a 14-yr-old son, and we're practically exhausting things that we can enjoy while the mom's and dad's "knees are still strong" and the son still willing to tag along =) My son at 12 yrs old, we have already climbed Pulag and Mt. Kinabalu, rappeled, went white water rafting, parasailed and we hope to enjoy more time and adventure together as a family. My parents turned 69 and we had a parents-daughter bonding trip to Boracay last year. I'm also the youngest and I'm relishing these years that I'm able to relate to them not just as my parents, but also as my friends.

If only we have all the time in the world. I feel I don't have much time left to do that and I'm just squeezing out as much time as I still can. But work and other things get in the way of me spending more time with my parents.

I'm still young, but I feel my son, being a typical teenager, has somehow started to"outgrow" my husband and I, which we expected at about this time that he hits puberty. And lately he has other interests. We're just thankful for the family bonding time that we were able to invest in our son while we were the whole world to him.

Thanks to the Sunday Feast, I've discovered the Feast and the LOJ community just the start of this year. We were churchgoers, but that's about it. But with the Feast, my son looks forward to attending it as much as my husband and I do, and we're just thankful that once again, we're growing together as a family and this time we're growing together in Christ. I've started to bring my mom too, and I look forward every week to this time and opportunity that I get to spend with Mom. I'm praying that my Dad will join us soon, he's Protestant and not really religious, but I fervently pray that things will change soon.

Thanks, Brother Bo and to the LOJ community. I'm still racing with time, but now we're racing with time together in Christ =)

    Dear Bro. Bo,

You really spelled it out. Those are my big goals too before I reach 45. I'm 36 years old and definitely has more time than you. And yet, there were times I feel that time is running out for me. And when I do feel that, I feel so lazy that it turns out that I spend a day doing nothing significant.

I'm just concerned with Goal No. 3. I know Ms.Dinna Revilla is a friend of yours and the author of the Think Rich Pinoy book (Larry Gamboa). Unfortunately, I watched her dragged along by NBI and put behind bars for estafa cases in one of the episodes of Imbestigador in GMA Channel 7. I don't want that to happen to any of your "How to be Truly Rich" followers. I have read 4 of your books and I'm avid follower. But I hope it won't turn me into a monster like Ms. Revilla.

Does wealth turned her into one? What can you say about what she did?

    Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your 4 golden(!) goals before reaching 50. I never realized how really important those 4 things are -- if only for their being time-sensitive. I love how you put them down, nice and clear; something to keep up, front and center. God bless you!

Thank you for sharing your 4 golden(!) goals before reaching 50. How easily one can take those things for granted; lost in the busyness of life! I never realized how really important those 4 things are -- if only for their being time-sensitive. I love how you put them down, nice and clear; something to keep up, front and center. God bless you!

    Hi Bro. Bo,

I have never been so learned about the teachings of GOD but I am aware that doing good deeds to others make me extremely happy. I have never thought of being financially rich because I heard from others that money is evil but when I got sick and was expecting people I have helped would be able to help me in return,I was so wrong and I realized that I should help myself first before I could generously help others. Now, I have confirmed that what I am feeling towards becoming financially rich by saving money and investing as early as now is not bad at all. The richer we are the more we could help people in dire need.

Thank you so much for your untiring enlightenment.

More Power and may GOD bless you and your family.

  39. Great sharing! Candid and very inspiring. I think I'll follow that pattern, listing down things before I reach that certain age.
Thanks Bo! God bless you and all the readers here.

  40. thanks for these tips and inspiring words. i'm fifty and my daughter is only eleven. although i believe God will continue to bless me, honestly those thoughts that comes with aging really make me worried sick. i remember so many years ago every time i join a new company to work with, i always dread being asked the same question "how do you see yourself 5 or 10 years from now?" after working for 30 decades now (gosh!), i still can't answer that question. arrgh!!! but life is a constant struggle and hopefully your 4 golden tips will truly help me see myself 5 or 10 years from now.

    thanks Bo. :=)

  41. Hello Bro. Bo. can you guide us regarding the stockmarket? I've been reading your books and following your suggestions in investing. But sadly, I lost money on equity funds several times. Can you please guide me? I plan to attend the September seminar.
