Find The Meaning Of Your Name—
And You May Find The Meaning Of Your Life.
Grace Princesa walked in through the door.
“I just came from Cairo yesterday,” she greeted me.
I looked at the people around me in the restaurant. I’m sure they had no idea that I was at that moment talking to a real-life, true-blue, big-time Diplomat.
As early as 2002, Grace was already the Charged’affaires and Consul General in Baghdad, Iraq. Her last assignment was as Minister and Consul General at the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland.
Today, she is Executive Director of the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations (“UNIO”) for the Department of Foreign Affairs—while she waits for her next foreign assignment. She has already worked in America, UAE, Egypt, and Jupiter. (Just kidding. By the way, I created www.kerygmafamily.com for people like Grace who live all over the planet and need massive spiritual nourishment for their personal growth. So far, KerygmaFamily.com has members from 46 countries! Sign up now at www.kerygmafamily.com and get a mountain load of spiritual nourishment for FREE!)
Her next sentence blew me away.
She said, “Sorry for being late, I had to take the MRT to get here.”
“Wha…?”
The Princess Rides the MRT
I shook my head, “A Diplomat traveling by MRT?”
Honestly, I thought Grace had just stepped out of her black limousine.
She laughed. “Bo, I do take the MRT. Especially now that my car has been breaking down. And I didn’t want to miss our meeting, so I took the fastest route coming here, and that was through the train.”
This was my first exposure of how simple Grace was.
When she’s not flying to some far corner of the world, I see Grace attending the weekly FEAST without fail. [We describe it as “One of the Happiest Places on earth”. The FEAST is held every Sunday at Valle Verde Country Club, beside the ULTRA, in Pasig. We hold 3 sessions: 7:30am (Taglish), 10am (English), and 12:30noon (Youth). For more details, call 02-7259999.]
For months, she never introduced herself to me. She was content sitting down as one among many. It was only recently that she finally came up to me and said, “Hi Bo, can I give you Swiss cheese? I just came from Geneva yesterday.” That was when she gave me her business card and I learned who she was.
Grace told me that in her office, she loved mingling with the staff. Eating with them. Talking with them. “Rank and file” others would call them. But to her, they are simply friends.
The food we ordered hadn’t arrived, so I asked my first question.
“Grace, what is your most memorable experience in your work as a Diplomat?”
“War,” she answered.
Her Graciousness Was Tested By Fire
“I was Consul General in Iraq right before the war in 2003 and I took charge of evacuating all the Filipinos out of that country. Those were terrifying days,” she said.
“Watching it on CNN was terrifying already,” I said.
“We were in the middle of it. You could feel the tension in the air. And we were all afraid for lives. Because of my diplomatic status, my house became a refuge for the international staff of CNN, BBC, and UN. But I made it into a house of prayer. Though we came from various faiths and nations, we prayed together as one…”
“That’s beautiful.”
“And because I didn’t want to be a dead Diplomat, I finally flew out of Iraq on March 17. Three days later, March 20, the invasion and bombing took place.”
“Wow.”
“But Brother Bo, do you know how I was rewarded?”
“How?”
“After all my hard work, sacrifice, even risking my life, I came home only to be accused of corruption.”
“Oh no,” I said.
“Some people who didn’t like me spread rumors that I was given 2 million barrels of oil from Saddam Hussein.”
“My gosh. If you did, I don’t think you would have come by MRT today.”
“Some people simply wanted to destroy my reputation.”
I nodded, “I guess this is the story of every hero on the planet. After you give your life, blood, sweat, and tears for others, you’ll be attacked by envious people.”
“It was painful, but God sustained me. The rumors were all proven baseless.”
“God always vindicates us in the end,” I said, “Tell me. I love your name. Who is Grace Princesa?”
Your Name Unlocks Your Calling
“I’m a Princess because I’m a child of the King. I give God’s Grace to others. I’m a servant and a handmaid for the unwanted and unloved. And now, I’m an Ambassador for Christ!”
“Haha! Spoken like a true Diplomat.”
I took her photo and we ended our lunch meeting.
Riding home, I reflected on my name.
Bo is just a nickname. My baptismal name is (I take a deep breath before I say it…) Eugenio Isabelo Tomas Reyes Sanchez Jr.
It’s true, when I was in Grade 1, my classmates were already out in the playground and I was still in the classroom trying to write my full name.
And now you know why I love my two-letter nickname!
Here’s the meaning of my name:
o Eugenio means “Born of nobility”. Man, I’m special!
o Isabelo means “My God is abundance” and believe me, I live a charmed life of blessings.
o Tomas means “Twin” and I want to strive to live my life in the image of Jesus. This name will remind me that I am a twin of every poor person I meet. We all are children of God.
o Reyes means “Kings” and that means the King of all kings is my Father!
o Sanchez probably means Sanctius which means “Holy”. That’s my call!
How about you? What is the meaning of your name?
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

ReplyDeleteHi. My true name is McReynald. "Mc" is an Irish name meaning "son of." "Reynald" stands for conselor-ruler or ruler's counselor.
ReplyDeleteWhatever it may seem, I think it refers to God, the king and ruler of all the earth. His Son, Jesus Christ, is the counselor. He provides counsel through teachings, so that we could be directed in doing what pleases God.
At first, I do not like this name because I was born at the time McDonalds was introduced in the Philippines. Name craze probably, but when I learned about this, I realized that I should be thankful for indeed, this is an affirmation that I truly belong to Him.
Call me McRey. I'm the son of the king. And the Lord my God is my king.

Thomas means "Twin"
ReplyDeleteChristopher comes from "St. Christopher" the mythical saint that carries Christ as a child. The direct translation is "bearer of Christ"
Nice. Check out the next ones.
Liwanag means "Light" or "Brightness"
Hilado is Spanish for "Yarn" or "Ice Cream" translated from the Italian "Gelato"
Therefore, my name's meaning is either:
Twin bearer's of Christ bright yarn or
Twin bearer's of Christ light ice cream.
Either way, it sounds like wholesome fun to me :D
God bless
Fedie

Hi Bo,
ReplyDeleteThanks for revealing your name with us. By the way my name is Josef Anwar D. Panerio
Josef is the variation of Joseph. I believed my name is tag as "Joseph the Dreamer". That what most friends associate me. Maybe it's a joke. But I started to believe and like what they associate me. Joseph means "God will Increase".
Anwar means "The Brightest". Wow so intimidating meaning. I afraid I cannot stand its meaning. But I live by it, I believe God created as, as the brightest but no comparison/competition to others.
I did just that late last year - tried to find the meaning of my name , my full name, including family names of my parents which I entitled, The Gift of Name.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Melisa which was coined from my parents' names, Jaime and Louisa. that explains the single "s". And Melisa, be it single or double "s" or with a "z" means honeybee and honey is sweet. My second name is Therese from my Mama's favorite saint, St. Therese of the Child Jesus or the Little Flower. So I am a SWEET LITTLE FLOWER for my God and for my fellow creatures. It goes well with my well-loved line, "Bloom wherever you are planted." I always pray that wherever God leads me, I will bloom and be the sweet little flower he wants me to be ... coming out no matter where and what condition I am in and sharing myself to others with all the gifts He has given me.
I also take pride with the fact that my parents gave me their first names not only their family names.
My father's family name means "deep", as in very very deep. My mother's family name means "black". Yet both their families, despite poverty, were able to rise up from the deep or from the dark. From being pagans, my grandparents were converted Catholics and they were able to send their children (my parents with my uncles and aunts from both sides of the family) through college in Catholic high schools and colleges/universities. That was God's grace!!!
And here I am praying that I can live up to this name .. a sweet little flower emerging from the depth and darkness to be a light to my family and to others and to share my life and love to them in every "little way" I can. And I thank God for my parents and grandparents for this gift of name.
God bless!!!
my name means 'beloved by many', but i don't think it's true to my person, i am hated by almost everybody.

ReplyDeleteMARY, mother of Jesus.
Now, I am a full time mom of adorable twin boys.
My full name is Maria Elizabeth. They call me Liza. Here are the meaning of each names:
ReplyDeleteMaria - Spanish form of Mary, Latin form of Mary, origin is in Hebrew, meaning "Bitter or "The Perfect One.” According to the New Testament, the Virgin Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ.
Elizabeth – a Hebrew name which means “My God is bountiful", "God of plenty", “God’s promise" or “My God is a vow.” In the New Testament, the name is borne by a kinswoman of the Virgin Mary and mother of John the Baptist.
Liza - it is of English origin, short for Elizabeth (Hebrew) which means “God’s promise.”
My real name is Gleenda Socorro Santos
ReplyDeleteGlenda means pure and good (glan "pure, clean" and da "good").
Socorro means help, relief, succour (It was given by my father since he is a devotee of perpetual help in Baclaran, I was also born on December 8, feast of the immaculate conception)
Santos means saint
my baptismal name is Reginald de Vera, but after having going through a renewal experience 5 years ago, i decided to be called by a new name, "Redg." It may sound and even look weird, but it actually stands for Redeemed Eternally Delivered by Grace. Having this name always reminds me of who i am, that i am redeemed eternally and continuously delivered by the Grace of God.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed day everyone!
I was baptized by the name Veronica, my grandmother gave me that name solely because I was born during Holy Week and it was on a Good Friday to be precise....
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Acta Sanctorum published by the Bollandists (under February 4), Saint Veronica or Berenice,[1] was a pious woman of Jerusalem who, moved with pity as Jesus carried his cross to Golgotha, gave him her handkerchief that he might wipe his forehead. Jesus accepted the offering and after using it handed it back to her, the image of His face miraculously impressed upon it. The name "Veronica" itself is a latinisation of Berenice, a Macedonian name, meaning "bearer of victory"
Peace to all!!!
dear bro. bo,
ReplyDeletehi! true, there's much more in a name than we even realize. my name is estrella- corazon. i used only the first, to shorten it. estrella is spanish word for STAR. corazon is spanish word for HEART. my family name is spanish word for higland or MOUNTAIN. my husband's family name is spanish word for, to bud or to BLOSSOM, with the prefix de la. mountains are i think God's favorite places to communicate with His people. for instance, Mt. Sinai and Mt. Calvary among them. the Beatitudes were given by Jesus also in a mountain. so, my calling is to climb every MOUNTAIN in my life, to reach the seemingly impossible dream but made possible, by following my STAR, Who is Jesus, by living up to His teachings and examples in Mt. Sinai and Calvary, in order for His STAR to BLOSSOM in my HEART both now and forever!
so folks, love your names. there's really more to it than we even realize! amazing ! isn't it ?
i love reading all of the above. such lovely meanings hidden in a name. what's yours?
thanks bro. bo for this wonderful space!
God bless you and your family.

I was baptized with the name "Honey Reyes".
ReplyDeleteI never liked my first name and even told my parents I would change it when I get rich :)
However, I found out because of my baptized name I have a sweet life full of blessings with some painful stings along the way :)
My last name Reyes is the plural form of the spanish word for 'king' so it means 'kings'
I am the daughter of the King of all kings! The sweet daughter of the King!
That's why I want to be careful in naming my kids when that time comes... I want their lives to somehow reflect what their good names stand for.
God bless everyone!
I am Shalom Loren, derived from Greek words Shalom which means "Peace", and Loren which means "Seeker"...Hope everybody find peace in their hearts. God bless!
ReplyDeleteMy forename bears a major breakthrough in our family. It was through my mom that our whole household became a Christian and it all happened while I was still being conceived. In one of the Bible studies mom attended as she joyfully carried me in her womb, she came across 1 John 4:16 that says, "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him." Mom was greatly overwhelmed by the powerful meaning of this verse that she couldn't help but give me that monosyllabic--one-word-yet-impactful name. Despite the pressure of bearing such a sacred apellation, I am more than thankful, proud and blessed to hear many people say that I have been aptly named. Now, I am certain of the calling God bestowed upon me, and that is none other than to proclaim and let as many people as possible feel God's oh-some-ah-mazing LOVE for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, as I give my best each day, moment by moment, to live in Him and for Him alone.

Jane is my nickname. I was baptized as Maria Virginia Reynes but my late father registered my name in the local registrar as Mercedes. Maria Virginia means Virgin Mary . Mercedes means mercies. Reynes means kingdom. At present I am active in the Divine Mercy Apostolate, promoting Jesus, the Divine Mercy. I am not only encouraging/teaching people to pray the chaplet of the Divine Mercy but also the Holy Rosary. This is my calling. I pray that I could be with the Heavenly Kingdom in the next life. By the way, this coming March 30 is the Feast of the Divine Mercy or known as Mercy Sunday. The novena started last Good Friday but you can still pray the novena as a preparation for the feast. Jesus is attaching a very special promise during the Feast Day. " On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment ". [ from the Diary of St. Faustina ]

My given names in the birth certificate are Milagros Remedios - spanish terms for "miracles" and "remedies" and I think my maiden surname means "burner" when I looked in Spanish -English dictionary.
ReplyDeleteI know I have experienced many miracles in my life including physical healing....I guess after reading this article I came to realize the many small and big miracles or blessing I've been receiving all throughout my life! At the same time it has been by passion to look for answers or research about many things unknown to me just to help me or someone solve or remedy a concern that needs a solution!
Maybe I'm really living up to my names. I've noticed also that once I get into one project or idea, I'm very excited about it and "burning" with fire until I see its completion! Wow this article is truly enlightening! Thanks Bro Bo! God bless you and your family.
dear Bo,
ReplyDeleteI know the Grace Princesa you referred to in your very beautiful article because we used to belong to the same organization in college. I hope Grace gets to read this message because we are forming an alumni association and possibly, through this, be able to give back whatever services to others for all the blessings that we received.
If in case you do, Grace, please just email me at fatimaedna@yahoo.com. Your batchmates/ friends are looking for you (Mac, BoyO, May Y,Totie, Annellee, etc.) and want to get in touch with you and with as many UPI alumni as possible. Hope to hear from you!
Thanks, Bo and God bless.

Tubtim means precious red stone. So it is rather a precious stone shining and glittering of light for others, to let others find the Way, the Truth and the Life that is our GOD. And bring more souls to GOD.
ReplyDeleteThe English version is RUBY.
I pray that the meaning of RUBY would be like the meaning of Tubtim.
Hi Bo,
ReplyDeleteMy name is a combination of two spanish words. Rey means "king" and lindo means "handsome". The priest who baptized me nearly had a heart attack when he saw me - neither rich nor good-looking. Maybe he charged double or triple for the baptismal fee, thanks to my father who had a weird sense of humor. Mataas ang pangarap niya.
Now that I am a member of LOJ, I serve the KING, the real KING, and in the eyes of my King, I must be handsome after all. Kaya tama na finally ang ngalan ko, hohoho!!!
Thanks Bo. Great as usual.
Rey - Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children's Home
My name 'Ethel' means "noble"... when you are with God
ReplyDeleteand for God..I guess you must live a noble life - with dignity,
magnanimity...devoid of any lies and anything untrue...
Noble...Truth....they are twin virtues...hmmm...very timely is my name nowadays...when our nation is in the midst of its search for truth....
Thank you Brother Bo, and please pray for me...I am in
desperate search for a learning institute that would need my services as a Special Education teacher. My friends are
pushing me to go seek my luck in the 'land of milk and
honey'..but my heart says to serve my nation's SpEd
children first...I hope God shows me the right direction...
a little light will greatly help me...so pray for me please?

Hi bo.
ReplyDeleteMe too bro. Bo, when I was in gradeschool, in our exam my classmates were already in question no.5 and me I just finished writing my full name. Terrible.
My first name is Maria Gemma Luthgarda.
My name was given by my grandmother and I don't know the meaning of my name. Anybody help?
God bless and more power.
=)
My full name is Van Kristine. My Mom was reading a story about Ninoy Aquino's assassination and that he was carried to a van, thus, the Van in my name. Kris because he has this daughter named Kris. And the -tine, well, I was born on the tenth month of the year. I was named after a vehicle, a politician's daughter turned celebrity, and an even number. We are all called to be saints so I wish to be one too.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Precious JEwel De La Cruz. Precious means BELOVED, Jewel means GEM, De La Cruz means OF THE CROSS... If you put them together you'll have BELOVED GEM OF THE CROSS... (^_^)
ReplyDeleteMy name is GRACELYN, Its source is an English expression meaning "Love and protection of God, unmerited favor." My short name is GRACE, which means blessing/gift. =D
ReplyDeleteMy nick name is Dan and my full name is Iluminado Tan Cordero Jr. When i was a kid i hated my name coz my friends will tease me and even my family, pangit daw name ko and it was a hard time for me.. But now i love my name coz found out it has meaning.. And maybe the meaning is my calling.
ReplyDeleteIluminado means Light
Cordero means a baby sheep or a Lamb
Maybe my mission is to recieve Gods Light and be a light to others( lost sheep). Amen!
what a very inspiring article! ^^~ many have praised the "uniqueness" of my name (i should forever thank my mother for that!) although a lot have mistaken it for a boy's name (til they've heard the whole name). after reading this, i quickly checked what does my name stands for (coz i never really bothered). so (taking a deep breath too...^^~), here it is:
ReplyDeleteSIDNEY LORAINE
sidney - an evolved, shortcut term for st. denis (of paris (france). a christian martyr and headless saint for (against) frenzy, strife, headaches, hydrophobia, rabies and (diabolic) possessed people. in short, for troubled people ^^~
loraine - there are two meanings for the name "lorraine." one is that it pertains to the "kingdom of lothair," a holy roman emperor, and; a northern province in france where the saint joan of arc was born (a patronage for captives, militants and people ridiculed for their piety).
a very holy name indeed! i do believe that my name has a rekation to my mission in life. so far, some have aprreciated that i was able to help them go through their burdens in life no matter how "small" an act it was (such as a listening ear). yes, i am the living version of the "patron saint for difficult people."
hi kuya bo,
ReplyDeletehehehe, i don't know the meaning of my name. But one thing i know for sure.. HE loves me so much.
Hi Bro Bo!
ReplyDeleteMine is Gemma, i really don't know the meaning of my name, well, my mom told me that she got my name when "Ms. Gemma Araneta" won the Ms. International.
But one thing for sure I am "Gem" to our Lord.
God Bless.
My mom named me "Paulus"after Pope John Paul II. She like his personal warmth, kindness and great service so I think she named me that. It's hard imitating some of the late Pope's virtues, though (particularly his kind personality. I still find it hard to be patient, to forgive those who bullied me in the past and to not mistrust other people), However I do want to imitate Pope John Paul's zeal for making a positive impact and inspiration to the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Bro. Bo,

though my parents give me the name rean, which is a combination of their names. In a dream St. Michael the Archangel gave me the name "milo". I think it means a "soldier", "a soldier of God".
ReplyDeleteGod Bless!
My name is Genia (close to genial meaning warm and cheerful) Mariel (sea of bitterness.)
ReplyDeletetalk about contradiction. haha!
I used to regret having been named Kristine because my parents never offered any detailed explanation why they named me so. I always got the short and dry repsonse: because they felt like it. But having stumbled on google what my meant name, I have a bit of pride. Kristine means follower of Christ. In Kanji, the symbols for my name are for: eternal, reason, protect, heaven.
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense to me now. I've always been introspective and spiritual since I was a child.
I hope to live up to my calling --- whatever that is. It'll come to me, I hope.
i love it!!
ReplyDeletehow about you guyzz??!
Fascinating. I wonder what alleyious means.
