How Grateful, Positive, and Affirming Are You?
I need to be more grateful. And positive. And affirming.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Some people will actually say, `But Bo, you’re one of the most positive people I know.`
Yes, I know I’m positive. I sometimes drive my wife nuts because in the midst of a huge crisis, I’m Mr. Cool. As she cries and experiences a panic attack, I put my arm around her and say, “Everything will work out. You’ll see.” Which drives her up the wall even more.
But I’m not all that positive.
To be honest, there are days when I get so focused on my ministry—with all its problems, such as money shortage, relationship conflicts, money shortage, project delays, money shortage, staff problems, and… did I mention money shortage? Because of that, I fail to see how beautiful life is. Or how wonderful people are. And I end up meditating on my petty trials. (Imagine me in lotus position, thinking of nothing else except my problems, and instead of saying “Ommmm” I say “Owwww…” And instead of a tranquil face, imagine the face of someone eating raw garlic.)
That’s when my wife senses my despondency and gives me the hug.
A few nights ago, I met people who were so grateful, positive, and affirming—it was refreshingly inspiring. We were in the happy home of Derek and Amanda Ross, a lovely young American missionary couple. Derek left his profitable construction business in the US to serve here in the Philippines through True Love Waits International.
Munching on pasta with white sauce and gorgeous vegetables, we relaxed and chatted the night away. And for dessert, I ate the best homecooked chocolate chip oatmeal cookies I’ve ever tasted in the world (and I’ve been around the world), baked by their 10-year old daughter, Sunday. Chewy, soft, yummy.
Yes, they have five kids. Sunday (10), Honor (8), Kennon (6), Ada (4), and Eli, a 6-week old baby. For a moment there, I wondered if they were Filipino and Catholic.
But all of them had blond or brownish hair, so Filipino was out. Though Derek impressed with the heavyweight Tagalog words he knew like “karimaldimal” and “kagilalagilalas”. And he mentioned that he already passed the test of being Filipino by eating “balut” through the power of the Holy Spirit.
They’re actually Baptist, but they don’t talk about doctrines or denominations. They simply want to encourage young people to live pure lives—to give them the message that True Love Waits. (Their website has an incredibly cool name: www.wagmuna.com) He’s worked in Catholic and Non-Catholic schools, teaching young people to remain pure. We already invited them to speak to our youth group, and our kids loved it.
As I said, Derek and Amanda blessed me by their character: They were incredibly grateful, affirming, and positive. They kept praising their co-workers (who were not even present) again and again and again. They spoke about how fantastic the people around them are—their helpers at home, the friends they meet, the young people they work with… With glowing terms, they spoke of the Filipino people and the Philippines. They talked about their life and raved about how God blessed them with overwhelming blessings.
I was waiting for the usual complaints about life.
About the heat of the Philippines.
The traffic of Manila.
The corrupt government.
The irresponsible young people.
But none came.
Instead, praise was on their lips. They spoke of how blessed they were. They shared their small and big blessings from God.
Oh sure, they have problems: They wiped out their entire savings to come to the Philippines. They had immigration hurdles for their staff. And they have the usual insane days of raising five kids…
But that wasn’t their focus. They focused on the blessings—which to them was out of this world. And that was the reason why they were grateful, positive, and affirming.
Gosh, it was so refreshing to speak to people like that.
For example, one of Derek’s questions to me was, “So Bo, what do you do for fun?” He was concerned that workers of God don’t have fun. He said, “It’s not all about studying your Bible all the time. God also wants us to have fun.”
“I have dates with my wife,” I answered. (Which is true. One of the happiest things I ever do is being with her.) His questions led me to be grateful for what I have.
The 5 kids were replicas of their parents. Fun. Happy. Wonderfully pleasant.
And this is what I found out: They don’t watch TV in their home. (They watch pre-selected videos.)
I’ve been to a few (very few!) homes where kids don’t watch TV. And I’ve observed that the kids in these homes are more pleasant than kids inundated with TV. I don’t see the typical angst, disrespect, or negativity in them.
Amanda said, “I’ve noticed that among kids who are homeschooled.”
Amanda homeschools all her kids. When we learned about this, my wife and I could only stare at her with our jaws hitting the floor. “Wow, and I have my hands full on homeschooling one boy,” my wife said.
Amanda said, “I’m reading a book now written by a mother of ten kids. And she homeschooled them all.”
I went home with my spirit refreshed. Grateful, positive, and affirming people energize you in that way.
Can I ask you a question?
What kind of effect do you have on the people you meet?
Do they leave your presence refreshed and energized? Inspired and lifted up?
Or do they leave your presence discouraged and despondent, wanting to meditate on their petty trials (in lotus position and saying “Owwww…”)
Lord, help me to be more grateful, positive, and affirming.
Help me to bless the world.
the couple is very inspiring. they are filled with love and glory.
ReplyDeleteMeeting these kinds of people will really lift up your spirit, you'll gonna say that "the world isn't that bad at all." =P if we hear positive comments and affirmations from other people we have this drive to push us more to do good things to people. Reality speaking... because of our heavy schedules, busy life, heavy schedules and busy life... we tend to forget about the small blessings we get from God and for that we also tend to give importance on how big or small is the impact it made to our lives. I just hope that someday we will all be like the couple in the story so hatred and disappointments will be lessened. Hey! God gave us a wonderful world to cherish and enjoy... let's not forget that.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit alarming that young Filipinos nowadays are beginning to adapt to Western culture... Sometimes I find myself alienated by most of my friends coz chastity or purity are not to be found in their vocabulary anymore..sheesh.. I admire these Baptists.. Sometimes I think they're more "cathoic" than any other catholics.. heehee..
ReplyDeleteHi Bo, i've been contemplating about homeschooling my 5 year old boy and hopefully also my 1.5yr old baby girl in the future but i'm very intimidated about the responsibility and the work load. But i am very interested and one of my new years' resolutions is to research about it and find out whether i am capable of homeschooling or not. im totally sold about the concept of homeschooling. I just don't know if I am capable of doing it especially since my husband is away most of the time and the sole responsibility will fall on me. I have my own business so i work at my own time but i don't know if It will be enough for the time and effort that homeschooling requires. Please share with me books, articles about it and i'd appreciate personal insights from you and your wife regarding this. thank you and God bless your family! I've been very blessed since i started watching preacher in blue jeans daily at the start of the year. God bless all the work that you do! :) Gretchen (Mandy Ochoa's wife)
ReplyDeletegaling naman! bro. bo you remind us tao ka din pala! you undergo the same trials as typical people. You are a God blessing!
ReplyDeleteToday, i also undergo trials and problem but
ReplyDeleteTo terminate my loneliness, i try to reach out to others.
i wish i can be more grateful, positive and affirming.
i think that it is our mission to be grateful positive and affirming since few people are experiencing this.
someday we will help to build a community that are positive and affirming.
May the Lord Bless you and protect you ~ Numbers 6:24
Jesus is the best blessing in the whole world
True love waits. Need I say more?
ReplyDeleteThank you for the inspiration :)
Bo, in these very low moments of my life, i draw strength from the Lord through you, His Instrument. After reading this, I feel positive, I feel there is hope no matter how impossible things may be. Please continue praying for people like me who are in deep crisis here on earth. Holding on to the last tip of the rope, never letting go of our faith to the Lord. Finding the blessings out of the trials that we experience everyday. And continue to pray for those people who find joy in making other people suffer because of hatred and resentment in their hearts. I pray that the Lord will touch their hearts because like you Bo, I believe there is always something good in all of God's creation. God bless you and your Family Bo.
ReplyDeleteyesterday, my classmte ask me, "marilyn, yan naman? yan na lang palagi ang ino-open mo na website? (kerygmafamily.com) at palagi kang nagbabasa ng kerygma magazine?", sana dun ka naman sa iba na very interesting!" for those questions there's something come up to my mind that is there something wrong in visiting this website? or reading religious books? i was really upset why there are people like that. Sabi ko sa kanya! "it is that way to nourish my soul and to be a better person", they actually disagreed me and argued with me. They thought and said that all religious person are never been faithful to there love one or even to the church. they are discouraged for what other had happened or scandal issues that had made by the priest who are subject in rape case. My class mate told to me, that even Bo sanchez cannot be loyal to his wife, becasue he is a man, he will get tempted to other woman because according to him that it is nature to be tempted. They compared it to the priest that will also tempted. They get wrong me in visiting and reading religious books. Something that they thought that life is very boring when i do that. I was distracted even though my faith is in there to God and believe what Bo's tells in his preaching. I have so many questions in my mind that why there are people are like that? its hard to convinced them that they are wrong. pls enlighten my mind. pls. give me an advice! tnks.
ReplyDeleteJomar, thank you for informing me, but why is it that I received a Support Ticket from the Kerygma Family after I sent my message to the e-mail address that you gave me? What is it for?
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring and i feel invicible at this very momemt....
ReplyDeleteI realized then that life is not that bad after all...
This story reminds me to be thankful for the blessings that i have in hand...
And its inspire me to be the best person i can be while im still single in able for me to be the best mom in the world!
Thank you for sharing this story, it inspire me a lot!
By the way, LOJ Community helps me a lot, and here, Im not the person i used to be, though sometimes i fail to be faithful to my covenant to the lord but i see to it i always stand up! Its a real blessing!
Yup, we should always strive to think positive because it comes from being attuned with what the Holy Spirit wants us to be....being joyful, loving people among the other gifts despite the challenges that we face...it really refreshes one to be in the company of positive people but we also would have to replenish their reservoir of possitivity because there will be times when they will be needing recharging too. God bless everyone! Gnyt 2.

i agree. the key to being blessed is to feel blessed. fill the void and feel blessed!
ReplyDeleteit is great to be positive...i wish i have the same character like amanda and derek...cause sometimes i tend to be a negative person and make life hard to those around me...im trying to be a positive person..to make life easy and not worry too much about things,etc..we have to be thankful for the blessings and be happy...its great to read stories like the couple..and be inspired by them to to take life on a lighter mood..
ReplyDeleteI'm 19 yrs old and I'm also serving in a youth group and like every other youth group it has it's downs too. And lately a have been less positive with the people in our community, the things going on in our community and other stuff. Reading this blog reminded me that I was too focused on my service that I forgot to see all the wonderful things I used to see as I serve the Lord. I was too hooked in "serving" that I totally forgot what serving is. These negative things around me made me forget that I was serving because I was simply loved by God and all the negative things around me will never overshadow that
ReplyDeleteThanks Bo for the very inspiring and enlightening article! As a struggling Catholic Christian I suddenly realized my own weaknesses in these areas.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to have more of these people around to inspire us, but more importantly, we need to have the same positive attitude in order to inspire peple around us.

ReplyDeleteHello Bro.Bo! My aunt here in the States has 6 kids, and lahat yun homeschooling din, napansin ko nga na they are more prayerful, obedient and respectful. Screened yung pinapanuod nila and they have lots of bonding time.
Kaka-blessed yung couple sa TrueLove Waits. Like you, they know that we should serve God First.
GodBless! Jeus loves you!
Everytime I read about homeschooling your children inspires me to also do the same for my son who will be turning 6 this April. I've gone through some of the write ups on homeshool education and i gathered that parents participation is required. Much as I would want to be part of this program, in case I enroll my son, I would be constrained with my work schedule. How could it be possible for my son to be homeschooled in this upcoming school year. Currently, he is a Kinder I pupil and we live in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWow! thanks for this article bro.bo, this is very inspiring! If only people would learn to appreciate other people then we could have a happy and peaceful life then. AFFIRMATION can uplift ones soul, it can give confidence to ones self and can give joy to people.
ReplyDelete:) very inspiring and encouraging!
Go go go lets affirm!
Type your comment here.thank you so much for this article.it really help me a lot especially now that im estrugling with boredom ang homesick in other country.it help me realize i have so many things to be thankful insted of being negative.that im so lucky coz i have the chance to stay on other country.were in many of our fellow countrymen wnts to do.as of now i can start to think positively on every things that will come in my life here.thank you so much.and one more thing .i also want to take this oportunity to say thank you to SIS EVELYN INDIONGCO. who happen to take time talking to me when i had a counceling with her.GOD is really good coz he always there for us.thank you so much and GOD bless you always.
ReplyDeleteHi BO!this is the first time i logged on to your website. i don't live in the PI now, but am out of the country for work. i was living alone at first for a few months, adjusting with new work, new environment, new culture, new people, pressure was building up...while away from my family, and in my solitude i felt GOD embrace my life. since i left, everything in my life depended on faith, and i learned to WAIT-really wait for God's GO signal in every decision. i used to be short-tempered, but the waiting game God made me participate enlarged my faith in HIM. days seemed so gloomy most of the time, but i always hear God say to me "SMILE!-i am in control, have faith and you will see"...and slowly, things and events in my life started to change. of course up to now i still have a lot of problems, faith challenges, but i always hold on to God's promise, and to smile, for He is in control INDEED(mahal magpatanggal ng wrinkles no!)...living in a foreign country isn't at all living in elegance and wearing designer clothes(or so i thought), rather it's a big sacrifice, being away from the people you've grown with all your life. whatever problems our country have, we can still be happy, whatever state we are in. as long as you allow God to play an important role in your life...
ReplyDeleteWow, this story is really inspiring. If only most Filipinos approached life with such positivity, we'll be way past all our problems.
ReplyDeleteBo, I'm really glad to have found you blogging. I'm a huge fan! Haha. See you at the blogparteeh this coming weekend. :)
Bro Bo, living with the Ross family for 6 months was certainly refreshing, as was this blog. I am tickled that someone can capture "the Ross experience" in words. I recall times when Kuya Derek would read excerpts of "Thank God He's Boss" to us (after postively and gratefully affirming what an amazing writer you are). Thank you Bro Bo for inspiring us with your gift of words and thank you to the Ross family for your gift of love.
ReplyDeleteits always nice to hear that there are still people who can stay positive in life despite all the difficulties they go through...I do believe that counting your blessings everyday and stay positive...focusing on affirmation and good things would bring back good things in your life...One thing I have realized in life is that you have to stay positive...and focus on good things because it would greatly affect on how you think and perceive life...why focus on the bad things or negative things in life...life is too short to be unhappy.....so one must always decide to stay happy and positive....i too have my own share of low moments....but practicing being more grateful, positive and affirming gives me joy within....

ReplyDeleteyou described derek and amanda and their brood of 5 right. they are some of the most affirming, positive, inspiring, simple people i've known. i just happen to work with derek before he went all out for tlw. thanks, bo, for sharing how your time with them meant to you. coming from you, it was truly a one-of-a-kind compliment. hope i get to meet you someday.
i am actually having a very hard time right now. two big personal crises and i do not how i i could overcome, accept, and embrace everything that'll comein between my life with these 2.
ReplyDeletehaving read such article, mr. bo, i found great positivity but it passed right away i finished reading. i look up to people like them, like you because i know once in my life i have become as such..but now, i am in the point of breaking down.like i would succumb to depression and all that.
still, i choose not... i have my family who i love so much and who i wish to return support to someday..then people like you who inspire and personify enlightenment.
i wish you further success in your mission, mr. bo, as well as this couple who remains positive, affirming and grateful amidst life hardships.
i hope i'll have the courage and faith always to view my life in this way. if it's not too much to ask for a favor, please do includ eme in your prayers.
thank you and God bless.

sitting here at my work station moping about the wrong decisions i've made including the consequences of those actons, plus the fact that 50% of my lady friends just want to get pregnant without the benefit of having a husband (out of desperation) - i was crying out to God for encouragement and after 30mins or so, i found this article. God is so good to me! Unworthy I am. Thank you for your ministry. I know I will go home today renewed, encouraged, positive and grateful. God bless you and your family for always :)
ReplyDeleteThe irony of life... Derek & Amanda chose to give up whatever they have in the US just to live & serve (God) in the Philippines while hundreds & thousands of Filipinos migrate to the US for a greener pasture. I am one of those. My husband & I are both nurses & we've been here in the US for a couple of months already together with our 18 month old daughter. My husband is the only one working right now while i am self-reviewing for the state board exam to have my RN license.
ReplyDelete"Catholic" is a minority here..even the Filipinos we met are not all Catholics. That makes me miss my catholic community back in the Philippines a lot. But I believe there is a reason why God allowed us to be here. I pray for His continued guidance on us & i thank you Bo & the Kerygma family for this website. It's a great help.
Hi Bo, thanks for being a God blessing, just very recently, i finished reading your book, how to find your one true love! and i was really amazed of what i discover, that i already found one, I'm keeping my mind think of the possibilities that my current GG now is not really mg one true love, but after reading your book, i finally realized that he is my one true love! and im willing to wait for the next level of our relationship, this time it's more meaningful and im more contented with my God's gift. Thanks Bo, you made me see the real blessing that is already infront of me. Thank yous o much...

ReplyDeleteive been a reader of your articles kuya Bo since college. your books inspired me a lot and help me helps myself and others too. some years ago, i went to a search-in seminar and asked lots of questions that remained unanswered. When ive got your book on how to find your one true love, i told myself, finally the book to answer straightly all my questions has come (halleluiah!). and your "Simplify" series is incredibly great. I am sharing it with my families and friends!
thanks for being a blessing to us!
Irony of Life...
ReplyDeleteDear Lenz, si derek po ito,
The number of Filipinos working abroad is 6 million worldwide 3,000 Filipinos leave the country everyday. What state are you in?(info@tlw.ph)Matthew 10:39
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it, ibig sabihin, kung sa states... maghanap ng Diyos, kung dito sa Philippines pareho din, kahit saan magpunta, makita mo ang Diyos!
dear gretchen ochoa,
ReplyDeletei have a 3 year old little girl n a 1 year old boy...i have the same concern as you are..and we're here in australia.one of the things i worry about is the way younger generation here in australia lack values n discipline inspite of the availability of school materials and up to date learning curriculum..i am kind of thinking about home schooling too.its a good thing that bo had mentioned about it...and now im all the more keen on homeschooling.
This blog is very enlightening on my part and made me reflect on that one question .... now I have realized that I am not a good follower of God for I always end up complaining on life.... I know that this is one of God's way to help me and become a better person for His glory. Please do pray for me to become more grateful, more positive and affirming so that when I share to others theycan be inspired and in love more with the Lord...
ReplyDeleteThank you and God bless you all :)
Hi Bo, This is a very inspiring article of yours. You see I have a 4 yr. old son,
ReplyDeletemy wife & I are both working but we are really interested in homeschooling our
child. We do not know where to start in terms of homeschooling, could you pls,
share with us some books, articles & any's on homeschooling. By the way, I agree
with the part on the effects of media (TV) on the young generation today. We as
parents has the responsibility to filter information coming form these sources
before it is received by our children.
God Bless! - Ricky
hi bro bo, gusto kong pasalamatan si Pauline (student in ICA) na nagdala ng kerygma magazine

Hi! I have read most of your books and have given them to my family and friends who I think would need it more than I do. It is very inspiring to know there are still people who think positively in everything as you describe. Last night while watching , you mentioned being a an inverted paranoid and it struck both of us.......your right, inthis world of uncertainty, poverty and violence it would make a difference to be an inverted paranoid. Thanks, you have continually inspired me and my family for years.
ReplyDeleteBro. Bo,
ReplyDeleteI've read your books, I am an avid fan of your Kerygma TV on Channel 9, I've
heard you once in the Anniversary of WME (Worldwide Marriage Encounter) in Camp
Crame and how fascinated I am listening to you. I would like to thank you simply
because, I find it amazing that everytime I watch you on TV, it seems that you
have the ready answers to the problems or difficulties that I've faced the past
days. So I won't mind waiting for your show because I believe that something
good and graces from God will be obtained by me by simply watching and
listening to your talks.
Thanks a lot, more power and hope you stay healthy. You are a blessing to
millions of people.
it is a nice article,to be honest it is so hard for me to be a positive and affirming person when i am upset of my present situations but the two couple were the best example who portrays it.But I know I am trying my best to enhance this attitude because this is the way that we could build a better community.A community of love and care. Thanks Bro. Bo for this inspiring article,it is a great help for us.
ReplyDeletei second the motion of bo. met bro derek recently and was amazed by his insights, mission in life. he and his family truly depicts true servanthood!

dear bro bo,
ReplyDeletewould you believe that i maybe was born already smiling not crying? i am a positive person, grateful but not a vey affirming person.i am able to laugh at my mistake and think of beautiful reasons for some bad situations, onetime my friends and i are walking in a mall, we saw an old friend who snubbed us,we were surprise about her reaction, and when my friends recovered, they got angry,i told them not to get angry, hoy wag kayo magalit baka sobra ganda natin ngayon kaya d nya tayo nakilala,so we just burst out laughing.
at saka nga pala isa ka sa idol ko sa pagiging positive, and grateful.lagi mo kinukwento mother and father mo.
and tatawa ka nito
alam mo kanina nanonod ako ng marimar? ha ha ha naiisip ko kayo ng wife mo as marimar and seryo,kc nasa tagaytay sila,e naaalala ko sinasabi mo na nagdedate kayo ng wife mo.
bo, i just have one question maybe you can help me figure out:
ReplyDeletewhy do we have to live and suffer from things and what's the end of it all?
i shouldn't be asking this. i should have faith. and i should at least have a positive idea on things i cannot change, control and fully change, but i just wonder. thanks very much hope to read from you...
it's such a great article! Bo, thank you so much for sharing us this. It helped me to be more positive in my life. God bless us all!
