Money Doesn’t Buy Happiness; Money Buys Freedom

And I Urge You To Use That Freedom To Love God More!

Once upon a time, I was poor.

And proud of it.

I was a happy single missionary who didn’t think about money, didn’t touch money, didn’t save money, and didn’t want to have anything to do with money.

At that time, I really believed that saving money was a lack of trust in God.

I also believed that insurance was for the spiritually weak. “Jesus is my only insurance,” I’d tell everyone.

And businessmen? Man, I pitied them. I figured their souls were loitering in the brink of Hell. Why? Imagine, all they think about the whole day was money—the very instruments of the devil.

I repeat: I was poor and proud of it.

How poor? Before entering Jollibee, I had to first pull out my wallet and count how much money I had. Could I buy a burger today? I remember the days when I had to turn around because my cash (or coins!) wasn’t enough.

I was proud that I was poor, deprived, and suffering.

It somehow made me feel holy.

Love The Lord With All Your Heart, Mind, Strength—

And Money Too!

Today, my beliefs have totally changed.

And that’s why I’m being criticized.

By religious people no less.

They say I teach too much about money.

“Bo, why have you changed?” they ask me, “You now keep talking about savings and investments and business. Where’s the sweet and simple guy who used to talk only about God and prayer and holiness and heaven? We want that guy back…”

Sorry, but you won’t get that guy back.

Because God has changed me.

Let me tell you why I changed: I decided to love more.

Don’t get me wrong. I still preach about God and prayer and holiness and heaven. (After all, money is only one of my many topics.) But these past few years, I’ve been very burdened by the practical, down-to-earth, very REAL needs of God’s people.

Here are the facts:

· Many good Christian families are buried in debt. They can’t sleep at night. They’re terrified every time the phone rings.

· Many good Christian husbands and wives fight a lot because of money problems. (According to surveys, 50% of marital conflicts are money problems. One survey even says it’s 80%!)

· Many good Christians will be retiring without any savings or investments—and will grow older and poorer as the years go by.

· Many good Christians are living in poverty, and their children are suffering from poor health and poor education.

And that’s the reason why I changed: I want to help Christians get out of debt, solve their financial problems, and gain more financial blessings to help more people!

This is my commitment. This is my mission. This is my passion. (I don’t care how many people criticize me for it.) I’ve devoted my entire life to help anyone who’s suffering by giving practical wisdom through my preaching and writing.

Whether spiritually, emotionally, or financially.

For Many People,

Unless There’s Financial Freedom,

There Can Be No Real Freedom In Their Life

You know my story.

Because my beliefs have changed, my financial life has changed as well.

Can I brag? (Not to brag but to emphasize a point.)

I’m no longer poor.

I now run small businesses, earn through real estate, mutual funds, and the stock market.

I’m now able to help the poor in a way I couldn’t do before. And I’m able to give more to the ministry of the Lord because of the financial blessings He has given me. I don’t just give 10% of my income. Because my lifestyle has remained simple (no fancy cars, no big house), I can give much, much more than 10% to God. (By the way, I’ve also learned that when I give, I receive so much more. I invite you to give regularly to the Lord’s work. Join me in my ministry. Log on at www.KerygmaFamily.com now.)

Today, I also believe that holiness doesn’t have anything to do with being poor or being rich. Holiness has everything to do with love—and one can do that whether one is poor or rich.

Money doesn’t buy happiness; Money buys freedom.

Bad people will use that freedom in a bad way—and be miserable as hell.

Good people will use that freedom in a good way—and be happy as heaven.

To be more precise, good people will use that freedom to do good.

It’s that simple.

Let me give you a small example of what I mean.

Today, I no longer stop in front of Jollibee to count my money.

And today, I can do something I could hardly do before: I can now invite the poor for a free lunch. Something I do constantly with joy.

In other words, my prayer has changed.

Before, my prayer was, “Lord, I need something to eat. Please give me money.”

Today, my prayer is, “Lord, send me people who have nothing to eat today and let me be a blessing to them.”

Friends, I’m using my freedom to love.

And after all these years of helping so many people in their spiritual lives, I’ve come to a striking realization: Especially for those children or parents depending on them, there can be no real Freedom in life without Financial Freedom.

I want to continue to teach you how to grow your money without robbing your soul.

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

    Hi Bo,

It's really an awakening, even in the bible from OT to NT God teaches us to save and invest. No wander most of the big businesses are owned by Jews, now the truth has been spread and it is up to us to practice and learn. With your teachings and preachings hope everyone can be blessing to others. God bless. Thank you.

  2. Hi Bro. Bo,

Thank you for another inspirational Blog. I was watching Oprah Winfrey's Commencement Speech on YouTube and here's what she says about money.

"...having a lot of money does not automatically make you a successful person. What you want is money and meaning. You want your work to be meaningful. Because meaning is what brings the real richness to your life. What you really want is to be surrounded by people you trust and treasure and by people who cherish you. That's when you're really rich. "

God Bless you and your staff... may you continue to share your talent with us.

    Thanks!

  3. HI BROTHER BO,

I DON'T HAVE MUCH MONEY BUT I ALWAYS TRY MY BEST TO OFFER TO THE CHURCH AT LEAST A GOOD PERCENT OF WHAT WE EARN NO MATTER HOW THAT MONEY IS NEEDED FOR OUR DAILY NEEDS....FOR IT IS WHEN I GIVE, THE MORE I FEEL BLESSED..AND IF I HAVE MORE MONEY I BELIEVE THAT I CAN SHARE MORE NOT ONLY TO THE CHURCH BUT TO DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS THAT NEEDS IT...IN SHORT, MONEY IS NEEDED IN THIS WORLD NOT ONLY TO MEET OUR DAILY NEEDS BUT TO SHOMEHOW SHARE OUR BLESSINGS AND SHOW TO OTHERS THAT WE LOVE AND CARE FOR THEM....

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE BROTHER BO!

  5. Hi Bro. Bo,

I had undergone the same experience you had. But while in your case, it was your choice to be poor, in my case I had no choice. I was born very poor and grew up very poor. I never owned a single pair of shoes throughout elementary schooling, nor a box of crayons or watercolor nor a schoolbag. I went though public school barefoot for 6 years.

I was a working student throughout high school and college. And when I finished college, I promised God I will help the poor. Now I am no longer poor and because God has blessed me with financial blessings, I am filled with joy every time I help the poor.

Like you Bo, I want all Christians to become rich and be in a position to help many other people. One cannot help another rise from poverty if he or she is poor also. God must be so sad seeing so many poor when His plan for men is for us to enjoy life to the full without being burdened by debts, financial insecurity, and settling for lousy schools for our kids.

Please keep up your seminars and talks about money. Many people are being blessed by it. I know, because I myself was blessed so much when I attended them.

  6. I believe that part of our responsibilites as Christians is to be good stewards of what God has given us. And for me financial literacy is the key to it. God is always ready to shower us with abundance but if we don't do our part as stewards, those will eventually slip away.
Having enough resources (or more than enough) can be a tool towards holiness also. I believe that we can still honor God through our finances. When we give more and expect nothing in return, the applause of heaven is right out loud.

    Please continue praying for Ashpa.

    God bless!

  7. I used to think that once I get rich, I will be happy. But with Bro. Bo's teachings, I am slowly awakened to what is really God's purpose for having money. Money will buy me freedom, freedom to do what I want, so long as it's in accordance to God's will. And God's will is to love. It's a struggle, but once you get that right in your heart and mind, it will flow. Thanks Bro. Bo for always sharing with us your knowledge.

  8. HI Bro Bo,

I have been blessed for so many years by your talks and books and I pray that God would always bless you and your family.

Yes, I agree with you that without financial freedom, there would be no real freedom and I believe that I can also do it. Right now, I'm helping my housemaid to finish his college studies because, I believe that she has the potential to become successful in life. And hopefully, the more I become financially blessed, the more I can extend my helping hand to other people.

I am looking forward to attend some of your seminars in the future.

    God bless.

  9. Money in itself is not evil, the manner people use it and abuse it, is.. I believed God does not want His children to suffer in poverty but to live in abundance to be a blessing and testimony of His Grace to others.

Christians are good charitable people who understands the poor. But how can one give to charity when he is a charity case himself? More days before payday instead of more money before payday, can hardly make both ends meet.

If one is guilty about having too much, they are in the best postion to give it away to help.

Your blog speaks about life and the meaning of truly being a blessed Christian, spiritually and financially.

Thank you for the down to earth inspiration. God be with you.

  10. Dear Bo,

I am one of the person you are talking that are in deep debt that when the phone rings it really terrifies me. I get to be harass by collectors daily, it seems now I feel numb. I really don't have money to pay them without sacrifing the welfare of my family. At first I tried to pay the minimum amount of my credit card bills even to the point that I have to borrow again to pay for the previous debt and borrow again to pay for the money borrowed and it didnt stop.... until I can't anymore coz one day I realized that there no food on the table, the electric was cut-off, etc., I thought I was going crazy, had sleepless night, dropped weight, hospitalized. That is when I realize I need to provide my family's need first before anything else. So I accept all the unhuman harassment that the collectors give me. Your articles have helped my a lot on dealing with my spritual self. I still don't have extra money to pay my debts but am at peace with myself knowing that they cannot do anything about it even if I don't pay them, I know it is bad not to, but they way they treat you is like its them that you owe money to, and the interest is soaring high than you can imagine. As much as I would to attend your Truly Rich Programme so I can learn how to have more money and pay my debts I don't have the money to pay your seminars. I have learn not to add more to the debts that what I have now, I live within my means, transferred to a small apatrtment that we can afford. With the collectors - I just tell them to sue me instead since I really don't have money to pay what they are asking for I tried to convince them I pay P500/month but they won't accept it, so I guess its better that a judge will decide my fate with them maybe he will be more considerate and will hear my plight and understand my financial flow more than them. I just wanted to thank you for being there inspiring us and for letting me to air out my cents on my debt ridden life.

  11. Yeah, bro Bo. I did the same like you around last year. i hate money. and i didn't care too much about money. my mom seemed hopeless to her only daughter who hated money, becoz she wants her daughter to be a rich people.Well, now, i don't hate money. i need it, but it's not my first priority. muchas gratias, Lord...

  12. Bro. Bo,

I agree that rich people can be holy. I read many of God's friend in the bible are rich like King David.

  14. Hi Bro. Bo,

I've been very blessed reading your article, this one really touched my spiritual life and sense of responsibility, not to become self centered, be responsible for the money I earned, and to help other people in need.

I agreed with you that "there can be no real Freedom in life without Financial Freedom". People all over the world especially professionals are indeed in search of too much money, investment, etc. thru their present career status. According to King Solomon, all of these practices searching for more richness in life are vanity, meaningless. One thing considered meaningful is to be HAPPY, ENJOY what LIFE BRINGS, and be SATISFIED of whatever we have in our present life.

Real richness is having Jesus Christ in your heart, the center of our life.. If you have Jesus in your life, people will see His light in you.. and you can be considered far reacher than others. A righteous man is not getting tired of giving.. I'm very thankful to the Lord coz He's our great provider, He's taking care of my family's needs even at moments when our financial needs get's tighter.

Praise be to the Lord our God!

    God bless us all

    Regards,

  20. Thank you thank you thank you for this Bo.

I come from a family with money, and I can tell you, it's not everything you need to be happy. What I have discovered is that LOVE is the most powerful thing.

I thank God everyday for blessing me with financial education at a very early age (thank you Robert Kiyosaki). I am actually related to a REAL Rich Dad and Poor Dad (guess who i followed). However, for fear of being poor (we went through a difficult time too), I became miserly -- to myself and others. There was a big void somewhere.

Right now though, I am so much happier because now I realize that I am making money for God's work, not just mine. Seeing it that way gives a whole new meaning and purpose for making money. The more I gave, the more I made.

I hope that I can share what I know to more young people like me.

So many have changed because of your teachings especially on Financial Literacy. There was a time I have 4 credit cards, but I am happy that I have reduced it to 2 and I am continuously endevoring to pay off all my debts. You see, it gives me so much satisfaction everytime I finish off my debts and cut my credit card in halves. I not only feel but know that I am getting nearer to my Financial Freedom!

I am also involve in a new stream of business that will increase my passive income. I am expanding my borders so that, when I get old, I will be one of the 3% in the Philippines who are Financially independent.

May God Bless you More, for you are a Blessing to More and More People.

  29. hi bro. bo, yes, i agree, money can't buy happiness but more freedom to share it with others. eventually, happiness na rin if used in the proper way that God intended it to be, like what you did. in my opinion, whatever is one's financial status, one can share in proportion to what one has. like the poor widow who gave all what she has, is more blessed than the rich man who gave only small part of his riches. it's when one becomes a slave to money or greediness, that one becomes unhappy, for nothing really satisfies a human heart . " My heart is restless Lord until it rests in you." says St. Augustine. Only God can fill the void and every longings of the human heart. in short, we should have control over our money rather than be controlled by it , in order to be happy.
thanks so much for this wonderful article.
God bless you and your family.

  31. If your basic needs are not met then you must be doing something wrong. When your basic needs are met, money should be irrelevant to you. If it is relevant then "money is never enough" for you. We earn a living to live and not live to earn a living. Money is only a tool. God is priority and the only reason for living.

  35. Hi Bro Bo,

This makes so much sense... At one pt in my life, i was doing very well at work, earning a pretty good salary (altho no time to spend it), favoured by my boss and held in high esteem by my customers. But something felt wrong and i was afraid i was becoming too comfy and arrogant for my own good.

So, i quitted my job, "demoted" myself to working as a waitress and then as a receptionist in an animal clinic. All these was, i thought, part of my plan to bring myself "back" down to earth and in touch with my less privileged fellowmen. But i was miserable, i saw people/charity organisations in need and i didn't have the means to help them much.

So, i jumped back into my old life, got a decent paying job, altho still not so happy as i do not like the money-making commercial biz these days, but now i have the means to give financial help to people around me, to charities, to animal welfare groups and even to buy little presents to cheer unhappy friends up :-)

I have a really long way to go to even reach a fraction of your wisdom and closeness with God but i am plodding on. Thanks, Bo!

    God Bless,
    Julie

LETS BE PRACTICAL, WE CANNOT FULLY APPRECIATE THE FULLNESS AND GOODNESS OF LIFE IF OUR STOMACHS ARE EMPTY..ISNT IT RIGHT?

  50. LOVE THIS POST BRO. BO!
not only that this is awesomely inspiring but it gives justice to wanting to be rich not only for financial freedom, but for a cause... i've been born to a family of everyday 'meet-the-ends,' and looking back, it was an awful way to live life. of course God suffices our daily needs but it wasn't enough to really enjoy the fullness of life. gone were the days when the poor can still smile despite an empty stomach. things have changed so much and that's reality biting hard. and honestly,i do not want my children to suffer the same meet-the-ends lifestyle as i did. because i believe that's not what God planned for me and my family, God wanted me to be rich not only to enjoy his blessings but to be able to give blessings to others as well...

thanks for the insight... as always, you are awesome!
    ;-)

  51. [...] Uang Tidak Dapat Membeli Kebahagiaan, Tetapi Bisa Memberi Anda Kebebasan Dalam Menentukan Money Doesn’t Buy Happiness; Money Buys Freedom [...]

  52. The Church teaches that He who understands, accepts, and does God's will is truly happy. Do you agree?

    Happiness
People who are deep in debt can be happy. People who have cancer can be happy. People who live in poverty can be happy. People who have marital problems can be happy. People who are in prison can be happy.

The world teaches us that this is impossible, if not stupid. It defies common sense! It defies logic! Maybe if we insert the word ‘reasonably’ before each ‘happy’ word above, that would be acceptable- just don’t put ‘truly’ before ‘happy,’ right?

Now listen to what Jesus is saying in the Beatitudes. How is this possible? Could He have been wrong? Did He mean something else? Or maybe it's something not relevant anymore in today's world. How could anyone believe this? To be Christian is to be rejected by this world; to be the laughing stock of the world; to be always in last place.

    Giving/Helping
How should we give? Do we give unconditionally? Do we measure our ‘goodness’ by the number of people we are able to help? Can some people help better than others?

The formula is simple: poor people need money; hungry people need food, right? That’s the way of the world. You ask a poor man to choose between money and God, he will choose money. You offer a hungry man a choice of a meal or a prayer, he will choose a meal. After all, we should give them what they need, or what we think they need, NOW. They can pray later; they can learn about God tomorrow. You can’t pray to God on an empty stomach. You can’t praise God when you have cancer; when you are bereaved; when you have no money, no home, no friends- nothing. Can you love God if you don’t feel His love?

    Faith
What is faith? Is it a state of mind? Is your life guided by your faith? Or is it the other way around? Can we be faithful and practical at the same time? Do we choose to believe only those things in our religion which, by ‘common sense,’ intuition, or experience, are good for us?

What is God’s will for me? What does God want me to do? How can I love God more? One saint asked that question. Read the story of St. Jerome here: http://www.sspv-bishop.org/pdf/bulletins/2005/01_jan_05.pdf. You will either be enlightened or disappointed.

“I was proud that I was poor, deprived, and suffering.” Was it something to be proud of? What if you had not been consciously aware that you were poor, deprived, and suffering?

Money buys freedom? Why be enslaved in the first place?

    Simplicity. Humility. Praise.

  53. Q. What if you had not been consciously aware that you were poor, deprived, and suffering?

If your not consciously aware... what creature could you be...perphaps not a human being but a stolid rat prowling in the garbage with nonchalance and ever immune to the allure of the material world. My God, unless you live in the center of the amazon jungle with only woven leaves as your outfit then possibly you'd be unconsciously aware of being enslaved by the world.

    REALITY CHECK
Gone are the days when holy hermits have a good chance to sainthood before.
Its a new era today where saints learn the practical issues in life, learning how to love and give with fortitude just like BRO. BO. He is like the modern local Mother Teresa in our country.

I AGREE WITH YOU BRO. BO , I BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS BLESSED ME WITH THE SKILL TO BECOME RICH. AND I WILL WORK THE FRUITION OF THIS DREAM SO GOD CAN USE ME MORE IN BLESSING OTHERS.

How about you. Are you contended of watching the helpless poor from the comforts of your home.

If you can muster enough strength to let a poor stinking stranger dine with you in your house, then i bet u'd be inspired to think like BRO. BO

    GOD BLESS YOU BRO!

  56. Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him.

"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."( Luke 16:13)

'Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,"(Hebrews 13:05)

Money (love of) PHILAGURIA, from phileo, to love and arguros, silver, ["For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."(1 Timothy 6:10)] 9cp. philarguros, covetous, avaricious). Trench contrast this with pleonexia, covetous. covet, covetous, covetousness

    3. APHILARGUROS, No. 2, with negative prefix, is translated "without covetousness" "Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," (Hebrew 13:5) A.V. , R.V., “free from love of money” “In not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.”(1 Timothy 3:3), the A.V.
